Bonsella Hotel Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to the Bonsella Hotel on Bao Khanh street – it’s tucked into this narrow alley that you’d probably miss if you weren’t looking for it. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. The location is pretty brilliant once you figure out the neighborhood. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, which means you can grab those perfect sunrise photos without dealing with the tourist crowds that show up later. Plus, you’re right in the thick of the Old Quarter without being on one of those impossibly loud motorbike streets that never sleep.
The hotel itself feels like someone actually thought about what travelers need, not just what looks good in photos. My room was on the fourth floor (there’s an elevator, thank god), and I mean, the attention to detail was surprising for a four-star place. The bathroom had this rainfall shower that actually worked – you know how hotel showers can be hit or miss – and they’d stocked it with decent toiletries, not the usual tiny bottles of mystery soap. What really got me though was the bed. I’m usually a light sleeper, especially in cities, but something about the combination of quality mattress and the fact that Bao Khanh is just off the main drag meant I actually slept through the night. The street noise is there – this is Hanoi after all – but it’s more like a gentle hum than the motorbike symphony you get on Hang Gai or Ta Hien.
The staff situation is where this place really shines, and I don’t say that lightly because I’ve stayed in plenty of hotels where “friendly service” means they smile while being completely unhelpful. These folks actually know their stuff. The guy at the front desk (Minh, I think?) gave me directions to this little pho place on Hang Trong that I never would have found otherwise – turns out it’s been family-run for like thirty years and locals line up there every morning. They also sorted out my motorbike rental without the usual runaround, and when I mentioned wanting to hit some of the newer coffee shops, the reception team had actual recommendations, not just the tourist traps. Check-in was smooth too, even though I showed up at like 2 PM on a Friday when half of Hanoi seemed to be moving around the city. The lobby’s small but comfortable – there’s this seating area where you can actually work if you need to, with decent wifi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but for the price point and that location, it’s exactly what you want from a Hanoi base camp. You’re close enough to walk everywhere that matters, far enough from the chaos to decompress, and staying somewhere that feels like the people running it actually care about your experience.

Best location in the old quarter with Restaurants, bars, coffeeshops just outside the hotel. The lake just 2 minutes walk from the hotel. Wonderful, helpful and always happy staff and really good breakfast with amongst all fresh fruit and freshly made eggdishes like omelette or scrambled eggs. Great rooms with a really good bed and a modern bathroom! I We loved everything with Bonsella and I strongly recommend it to all people going to Hanoi!!

Perfectly located in Old Hanoi, walking distance to main attractions in the old town. The staff were great and went out of their way to ensure we were happy. For example, we've lost and item in a bus we went for a Ha Long Bay tour and they contacted the tour company, found the item, and had it delivered to our room, all within 2 hours – amazing! The breakfast was great with many Asian & Western food choices, as well as with made-to-order dishes. The bed was comfortable and the AC provided sufficient cooling to make the stay pleasent.
What could be improved: The shower in the bathroom needs some attention as it was leaking.Stcane from Australia – 5 March 2025 (9/10)

Very conveniently located, super friendly staff, walking distance to most attractions. Only a few steps from the lake which, if you're there at the weekend especially, gives you the chance to escape the chaos of the city streets and enjoy walking around the lake in relative peace. The rooms and bathrooms are big and comfortable.
What could be improved: The only minor issue was water pressure, but the staff said they would fix it immediately if we'd let them know earlier. We only stayed for 2 nights so it wasn't a big issue to us.
