Honestly, when I first walked into the Halais Hotel on Tran Nhan Tong, I wasn’t expecting much – you know how it is with four-star places in Hanoi, they can be hit or miss. But this one actually surprised me in the best way. The lobby has this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard, and the staff genuinely seemed happy to see guests walk in, which is refreshing after dealing with some of the more touristy spots around the Old Quarter.

What really sold me on this place was the location – I mean, you’re right in Hai Ba Trung district, which puts you close enough to the action but far enough away that you can actually sleep at night. The street itself is pretty quiet (well, quiet by Hanoi standards), and you’re literally a few minutes’ walk from some incredible local pho spots that most tourists never find. There’s this little coffee shop around the corner where locals hang out in the mornings – I spent way too much time there people-watching. The rooms themselves are well-designed without being flashy, and honestly, the beds are some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered in Vietnam. The AC actually works properly too, which anyone who’s spent a summer in Hanoi will tell you is absolutely crucial.

Here’s the thing about the Halais – it’s one of those places that gets the details right. The Wi-Fi is fast enough for video calls (trust me, I tested it extensively), the water pressure in the shower is solid, and they have this small but perfectly adequate fitness center that I actually used, which says something. The breakfast spread isn’t huge, but everything they do have is fresh and well-prepared, plus they make a mean Vietnamese coffee if you ask nicely. I did notice the elevator can be a bit slow during busy times, but it’s not a dealbreaker. The whole place has this calm, professional vibe that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere that cares about getting things right rather than just filling rooms. With an 8.7 rating, it’s clearly working for other people too – and after spending several nights there, I totally get why.
