Lakeside House Hanoi Overview
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Lakeside House Hanoi – tucked away on this narrow lane off Doi Can street, it’s the kind of place you’d walk right past if you weren’t looking for it. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. The entrance is understated in that way Vietnamese boutique hotels do so well, and once you’re inside, there’s this immediate sense of calm that’s pretty rare in Hanoi.
The thing about staying in Ba Dinh district is you’re right in the heart of things without being stuck in the Old Quarter tourist madness. I mean, you’re literally a ten-minute walk from Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and the One Pillar Pagoda, but the neighborhood itself feels more like where actual Hanoians live and work. Lane 135 is one of those typical Hanoi alleys – narrow enough that motorbikes have to slow down, lined with local coffee shops where old men play xiangqi in the mornings. The hotel sits quietly among residential buildings, so it stays surprisingly peaceful even during rush hour (well, as peaceful as anywhere in Hanoi gets).
What really won me over was how the staff just… gets it. They’re not overly formal like at some of the bigger hotels, but they know their stuff. The woman at reception – I think her name was Linh – had this mental map of every good pho place within walking distance, including this tiny spot two blocks over that doesn’t even have a sign. The rooms themselves hit that sweet spot between comfortable and unpretentious. Mine faced the lane, and I loved watching the daily rhythm – vendors rolling their carts past at dawn, kids heading to school, the evening motorbike parade when everyone’s heading home. Sure, you’ll hear some street noise, but it’s Hanoi – that’s part of the experience. The AC works well (crucial during summer), the bed was actually comfortable, and the bathroom had decent water pressure, which honestly can be hit or miss around here. Little touches like locally-sourced toiletries and actual wooden hangers instead of those flimsy wire things showed someone was paying attention to details that matter.
The breakfast setup is simple but thoughtful – Vietnamese coffee that’s properly strong, fresh fruit, and they’ll make you a mean banh mi if you ask nicely. I spent most mornings on their little terrace area, planning my day while watching the city wake up. It’s not fancy, but it feels real in a way that a lot of hotels don’t anymore. Plus, being on Doi Can means you’re perfectly positioned for exploring – West Lake is a short bike ride north, the Temple of Literature is walkable, and you can catch buses or grab taxis easily without dealing with Old Quarter traffic jams. For the price point and that 8.5 rating, Lakeside House delivers exactly what it promises: a genuine Hanoi experience without the pretense.

Reviews of Lakeside House Hanoi

Loved the location – the lake is attractive and quiet, the hotel is away from the road and really peaceful, but with lots of local cafes around. It's close to museums and other sites, and far from the craziness of the old quarter (which is easily accessible by bus or grab).
The people who work there are really friendly with great english and super helpful answering questions, and it's just a nice, chill place to stay – as long as you make sure you get a room with a window
What could be improved: Only really bright overhead lights, would be nice to have bedside lampSharon from United Kingdom – 28 April 2025 (9/10)
Excellent value for money – booked for a single night, extended for five! Modern property, thoughtful design, exceptionally clean and well maintained. The refreshing lakeside view and cafes right at its doorstep are a bonus cherry on top!
The owners were friendly and engaging and also helped arrange my tours to Sapa and Ha Giang with great communication throughout. Highly recommend, will certainly return!
What could be improved: Nothing at all.Caitlin from United Kingdom – 28 April 2025 (9/10)
Best hostel I stayed at in Hanoi. Actually clean, and the dorm only has four beds which is unusual for Hanoi. Great location, a lot of locals and not too many tourists, lively and fun. So good I stayed again and rented a private room which was very nice. If you’re sensitive to noise ask for a room away from the staircase – a lot of people coming and going.
What could be improved: Next time, I’d ask to stay down the hall vs. on the staircaseGrethe from Hungary – 1 April 2025 (9/10)
I booked a shared dorm spot for my son's stay here two years ago, as he was absolute satisfied it was out of question for me to stay here for couple of days. Tam, the heart of this venue is a born landlady, having an eye bot inly for 100% satisfaction of the guest but cares for the wider circumstances like planting new plants in front of the house. Comfortable matress and pillows for sweet dreams, any question answered, you can leave luggage and so much more little kind gestures from the house.
What could be improved: everything was all rightEitan from Portugal – 30 March 2025 (9/10)
Definitely a place you can book. Practically no downsides.
– Clean!
– modern and inviting, a welcome change from the more run down places we stayed at
– great location, much to explore from here
– kind staff
– mini fridge was stocked with water and other drinks, which we desperately needed (10k VND per small water bottle)
What could be improved: – was told we couldn’t come back after 11PM (didn’t test it out)
– the tone of the email you get sent after booking is not so welcomingJames from United Kingdom – 19 March 2025 (9/10)
Best hotel in Hanoi!
Lovely staff, beautiful location.
What could be improved: Nothing! Surrounded by bia joints, lovely views, perfect!!Nicolas from Spain – 20 January 2025 (9/10)
Although the location is not in the center, this is a really nice area in front of a little lake where locals do their activities and you can be really immerse in the culture. The staff was very kind and eager to help. The room was super clean, bed comfortable and great hot shower.
Lennard from Germany – 18 January 2025 (9/10)
Very clean, nice location at the lake (local area, not so touristic), warm shower and very friendly management.
What could be improved: The cheapest rooms don't have windows but that's why they are cheap 🙂Naumann from South Africa – 13 January 2025 (9/10)
Simple for what you had to pay and interesting location
What could be improved: The staff seemed a bit cold but it was really late at night so maybe that influenced itEllie from United Kingdom – 10 January 2025 (9/10)
