Mercure Hanoi La Gare Hotel Overview
You know what struck me first about the Mercure Hanoi La Gare? The name actually makes sense once you realize it’s literally a two-minute walk from the old train station area – though honestly, most people flying into Hanoi won’t care about that detail. What you will care about is that this place sits right in the sweet spot of Hoan Kiem district, where you can actually walk to the Old Quarter without needing a taxi every five minutes.
The hotel itself feels properly Vietnamese in a way that some of the international chains miss – I mean, it’s still a Mercure so you get that reliable mid-range comfort, but the lobby has this nice blend of colonial touches and local art that doesn’t feel forced. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star: clean, well-designed, with that slightly firm bedding that seems standard across Southeast Asia. The AC works well too, which honestly matters more than anything fancy when you’re dealing with Hanoi’s humidity. I stayed on the sixth floor and barely heard any street noise, though the lower floors might catch some of that classic Hanoi motorbike symphony – it’s part of the charm, really, but light sleepers should request higher up.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the neighborhood inside out. The concierge gave me directions to this little bánh mì spot on Ly Thuong Kiet (just down the street) that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned wanting to avoid the tourist traps around Hoan Kiem Lake, she sketched out a route through the backstreets that led to the real deal. The breakfast spread was decent – not groundbreaking, but they had proper Vietnamese coffee and some local options alongside the standard international stuff. Location-wise, you’re maybe a 10-minute walk to the lake, 15 minutes to get deep into the Old Quarter’s maze of streets, and there’s a convenience store practically next door for those late-night snack runs. The 8.3 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the kind of place where everything just works smoothly, the staff genuinely wants to help, and you can focus on exploring Hanoi instead of worrying about your hotel. Perfect for travelers who want comfort and location without paying luxury prices.

Very close to Hanoi railway station, barely a five minute walk. A busy hotel; lots of tour groups in and out all day long, so obviously a long standing decent reputation. Comfy, clean room with enormous bed, reasonable storage for clothes and a good bathroom. In a city as vast as Hanoi, the first time visitor has no idea about how good the location is but we were assured by family who live there that we’d picked a good spot. More a hotel for a short transit stop than a long stay, but none the worse for that. I’d use it again.
What could be improved: I booked a car to the airport from the reception desk and was shocked to discover that the price charged was about three times the going rate. Should have known better and used Booking.com app or local Grab app.Prashant from United States – 14 February 2025 (8/10)
Walking distance from the lake and conveniently located to few attractions.
What could be improved: Small rooms. No space for nags or to unpack bags or store clothes. Design as if you won't spend more than one night. Staff with limited English communication skills.Jonathan from United Kingdom – 11 February 2025 (8/10)
Good choices and tasty food

I liked that the property was on the outskirts of the Old Quarter away from the noise. It was close but not too close. The location was better imo. Also, the staff was very friendly and accommodating.
What could be improved: The room was fine, the size was fine, it had a window but there was no view contrary to expectation. Overall, the property was small compared to others at the same 4 star level.Clodee from United Kingdom – 15 December 2024 (9/10)
Perfect location for exploring Hanoi on foot. Staff very friendly. Starbucks up the road too for European style coffee

This place felt like an oasis in the desert after the first hotel we booked (an left immediately) in Hanoi. It is nearby all attractions, very clean and tidy. Staff is helpful, engaging and friendly. Breakfast is simple and tasteful, although the cheese selection could be improved. Overall we had a really nice experience. 100% Recommended!

Nice hotel in an ideal location, shower in the superior room was fine but went all over the floor using the rain shower, only grudge really, maybe need heating as we were there when it was 10 degrees outside.
