Minerva Church Hotel Overview

You know what caught me off guard about the Minerva Church Hotel? I was expecting just another boutique place trying too hard to be trendy, but honestly, this spot gets the balance right. It’s tucked right on Nha Tho street – and I mean literally steps from St. Joseph’s Cathedral, which is either going to be amazing or annoying depending on how you feel about church bells at 6 AM. For me, it was actually kind of charming, especially since the gothic spires look incredible from some of the upper floor rooms.

The location is seriously unbeatable if you want to be in the thick of Old Quarter life without the chaos of Hang Bac or Ta Hien streets. You’re a two-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake – perfect for those early morning jogs when the tai chi crowds are out – and close enough to the weekend night market that you can stumble back after a few bia hoi without needing a taxi. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. The guy at reception (I think his name was Duc?) gave me directions to this tiny pho place on Hang Trong that I never would’ve found otherwise, and it ended up being one of my best meals in Hanoi.

The rooms themselves feel thoughtfully designed rather than just thrown together. I stayed in one of their deluxe rooms on the fourth floor, and the bathroom had this rainfall shower that actually worked – you’d be surprised how rare that is in Vietnam. The bed was firm enough that I didn’t wake up with a backache, and they’d clearly invested in decent blackout curtains, which saved my sanity during those brutal summer afternoons. The air conditioning was quiet too, which matters when you’re trying to sleep and the motorbikes are still buzzing around outside. I mean, it’s Hanoi, so there’s always going to be some street noise, but the windows did a decent job keeping most of it out. One small thing that bugged me – the WiFi was spotty on the lower floors, though it worked fine once you got higher up. The breakfast spread was pretty solid, with a good mix of Vietnamese and Western options, though honestly, with all the incredible street food right outside your door, I only ate there once. That 9.4 rating makes sense to me – it’s the kind of place that handles the basics really well without trying to be something it’s not.

We just spent ten days in Hanoi, staying at the Minerva Church Hotel. The property is stunning, and is perfectly located within the Old Quarter but without the road noise. The breakfasts include fresh, cooked, and baked goods, as well as a menu if you want to order something else. It's the staff here are what make the experience. Thomas, Sunny, and Lisa are the first point of contact and they are exceptional. Not only did they answer all our questions, they arranged for our laundry to be done at a great price and with a same day turnaround. When we wanted to do a day trip to Ninh Binh they organised the itinerary to see what we wanted, a driver, and a car. The price was astonishingly cheap, and the experience was perfect. Khai the doorman is brilliant. Not only does he open the doors when we are with line of sight of the hotel, he moves our luggage, delivers our clean laundry, and does all the maintenance work as needed. The housekeeping staff are fantastic, cleaning rooms, making beds, and changing towels every day. After ten days we feel like we are leaving family behind, and we are genuinely sad to say goodbye. If you want Hanoi to feel like home, Minerva is the place to stay.

Central location, a great view from our room and all the staff (Thomas, the bell boy, the "spare" reception, and all the staff at the front desk who we met but didn't get the names) were incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and great recommendations. They helped organising our Halong Bay cruise and transfer, and even pre-packed breakfast for us given we were checking out at 4:30am. The room is spacious compared to some other hotels. Would recommend this hotel to anyone.
