Honestly, when I first walked up to Railway Apartment on Hàng Lược Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the name had me picturing something basic near the train tracks. But you know what? This place completely caught me off guard in the best way possible. It’s tucked right in the heart of Hoan Kiem, and I mean *right* in the heart – you’re literally a two-minute walk from the lake and all the weekend chaos that comes with it. The building itself has this charming old Hanoi character, sort of wedged between the typical narrow shophouses, but once you step inside, it’s clear someone put serious thought into making this feel like an actual home rather than just another crash pad.

The thing that really got me was how they managed to make each space feel genuinely apartment-like without losing that hotel polish. I stayed in one of their larger units, and honestly, the kitchen setup was better than my actual apartment back home – full-sized fridge, proper cooking gear, even a decent coffee setup (which, let’s be real, is crucial when you’re dealing with Hanoi’s early morning street symphony). The location means you’re getting some street noise, especially if you’re facing Hàng Lược directly, but that’s just part of the Old Quarter experience. Actually, I kind of loved falling asleep to the distant hum of motorbikes and late-night pho vendors. The staff here actually knows the neighborhood – when I asked about finding good bún chả that wasn’t tourist-trap expensive, the guy at reception walked me outside and pointed to this tiny place two blocks over that I never would have found otherwise.

What really sets Railway Apartment apart is how it feels like you’re living in Hanoi rather than just visiting it. The 9.4 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there a few days – it’s those little details that add up. The Wi-Fi actually works reliably (huge deal if you’re trying to work remotely), the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine, and they’ve got this great rooftop area where you can hang out in the evenings without dealing with the street-level hustle. I mean, you’re still going to hear the organized chaos of the Old Quarter, but from up there it feels more like background soundtrack than sensory overload. The whole area gets pretty lively on weekend nights since you’re so close to the lake and all the walking streets, but if you’re the type who wants to experience real Hanoi life rather than hide from it, this location is actually perfect. Just don’t expect to sleep in on Saturday mornings – the neighborhood wakes up early and enthusiastically.

  Good location. Host was very accommodating and kind. Enjoyed the train coming past (but maybe wouldn't be for everyone!) The beds were comfy too.

  Nice simple layout, no additional facilities other than the bare minimum. Comfortable beds, and very good location, near to a highly rated cafe that opens at 5am. 4 separate single beds as advertised, in two private rooms. Sound-proofing was good.
  
  What could be improved: A little bit hard to find on the busy street, as the unit number doesn't help when most units aren't clearly marked. It was at the end of the street, not somewhere in the middle, good luck finding the entrance. Check-in and payment instructions were given at the last minute so do message the host early if you have to rush.

  Location is absolutely in the middle of the old quarters, next door to the railways. The place is perfect for 2 people or a family as it is two rooms with two beds each. These are old but solid buildings with apartments that are getting repurposed for tourism purposes and they are slowly adding amenities for foreign guests. There is no lift but rather a sort of ramp/stairs, this wasn’t an issue to us but it may be for you. Beds very comfortable, working washing machine, WiFi, relatively modern tv and 2 air con units and fans. The washroom could use some love but it worked fine with us and the water was hot as needed. If you want to be in a legit old school Vietnamese neighborhood (which is super safe) you can’t go wrong here.
