Skylark Hotel Overview

You know what struck me first about the Skylark Hotel? It’s actually tucked away on this tree-lined stretch of Phan Dinh Phung that feels almost residential – I mean, you’ve got the Temple of Literature just a few blocks down, but it doesn’t have that touristy chaos you’d expect. The building itself has this understated elegance thing going on, sort of modern but not trying too hard to be flashy.

The lobby honestly surprised me – there’s this warm wood and marble combination that feels genuinely upscale without being intimidating. Check-in was smooth (they had my reservation pulled up before I even finished saying my name), and the staff’s English is actually pretty solid, which isn’t always a given in Ba Dinh. What I really appreciated was how they knew the neighborhood – when I asked about getting to the Old Quarter, the front desk guy didn’t just say “take a taxi” but explained the whole walking route along Hang Bong Street, plus which cafe to stop at halfway. That kind of local insight you can’t fake.

The rooms are well… they’re proper 4-star without any of those weird design choices some hotels make. Good-sized bathroom with a shower that actually has pressure, decent AC that doesn’t sound like a helicopter, and honestly the bed was comfortable enough that I slept through Hanoi’s morning motorbike symphony – which is saying something. My room faced the street side, and while you do get some traffic noise during rush hour, it’s nothing compared to what you’d deal with closer to Hoan Kiem Lake. The WiFi worked consistently too, which matters when you’re trying to figure out weekend plans or upload photos that don’t look terrible.

What really sets this place apart though is the location knowledge – you’re walking distance from some genuinely good local spots that most tourists never find. There’s this pho place about three minutes away on Nguyen Thai Hoc that opens at 6 AM and closes when they run out (usually around 10), and the hotel staff actually told me about it. Plus you can walk to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area without dealing with the Old Quarter crowds, which is perfect if you want to see the big sights but sleep somewhere that doesn’t feel like Times Square.

The breakfast is decent – not groundbreaking, but they do a proper mix of Vietnamese and Western options, and the coffee is actually good coffee, not that instant stuff some places try to pass off. Service throughout my stay was consistent; housekeeping was thorough, and when I needed restaurant recommendations for a business dinner, they suggested places that were actually appropriate instead of just the most expensive options.

Look, it’s not going to blow your mind or become your favorite hotel story, but the Skylark does what a solid 4-star should do – comfortable rooms, reliable service, and a location that lets you experience Hanoi like someone who knows their way around. For the price point in this part of the city, it’s honestly a pretty smart choice, especially if you want to be near the cultural sites without staying in a tourist fishbowl.

Reviews of Skylark Hotel

  • Kaj from Germany – 4 March 2025 (9/10)

We had a room with balcony. Balcony and room were very large, clean and comfotable. Excellent breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful. Central neighborhood for Hanoi sights with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. Excellent steam
hotspot restaurant (Ha ha Steem) two blocks away.

What could be improved: The terrace on the roof wasn’t open after breakfast and there was not enough seating around the small pool.

  • Phil from France – 2 December 2024 (9/10)

    Staff in particular.

What could be improved: Construction noise from the buildings next door. Not the hotel's fault but the working hours were very long.
