Sumitomo9 – Apartment at Alley 58 Dao Tan Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard the address “Alley 58 Dao Tan,” I pictured some sketchy side street situation. But actually walking up to Sumitomo9, you realize this is one of those hidden gems that locals probably wish tourists wouldn’t discover. The building sits tucked away just enough to feel residential but you’re literally a three-minute walk from the chaos of Dao Tan Street, which means you can grab those incredible banh mi from the corner vendor at 6 AM or duck into one of the proper restaurants when you’re tired of street food.

The apartment itself – and yeah, it’s definitely more apartment than hotel, which I mean in the best way possible – feels like staying at a friend’s place if your friend happened to have really good taste and actually cleaned before you arrived. The 4-star rating makes sense when you see the kitchen setup and realize you could legitimately cook here, though honestly, why would you when you’re surrounded by some of Hanoi’s best food? What struck me most was how quiet it gets at night, which is kind of miraculous considering you’re in Ba Dinh District. The alley acts like this weird sound buffer, so you get the energy of the city without the motorbike symphony at all hours. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward lobby hovering while they “find your reservation.”

The 7.5 rating feels about right, maybe even a bit conservative. It’s not luxury in the marble-lobby sense, but there’s something genuinely comfortable about the whole setup. The neighborhood walks are fantastic if you’re into that sort of thing – you’ll stumble across those tiny local cafes where nobody speaks English but they’ll still figure out how to make you the best ca phe sua da of your trip. My only real gripe is that the WiFi can get temperamental during peak hours, but then again, you’re in Hanoi – maybe that’s the universe telling you to go explore instead of scrolling through social media. If you’re the type who needs everything to be Instagram-perfect, this might not be your spot. But if you want to feel like you’re actually staying in the city rather than just visiting it, Sumitomo9 gets it right.

Reviews of Sumitomo9 – Apartment at Alley 58 Dao Tan

  • Phan from Vietnam – 5 September 2024 (5/10)

The room is spacious and equipped with all the necessary facilities. While the interior was generally decent but the bedroom wall is a bit mold.

What could be improved: The room across from us was blasting karaoke, but thanks to the soundproof door, the noise was significantly muffled. Although we only stayed for one night, we faced multiple issues. At 7:30AM, loud drilling began right next to the bedroom, making it impossible to sleep. We had to move to the sofa and close the bedroom door to minimize the noise. Then at 9:30AM, the security guard unlocked our room without warning and entered, simply to ask if we had parked in the basement. Even after we asked him to step out, he continued asking questions and didn’t shut the door. We were stunned as having someone unlock your room and barge in uninvited is just unacceptable

Close to a large supermarket and department store

What could be improved: It’s very hard to find. The taxi left us on the main road and pointed to an alley. For 20 minutes we walked up and down the alley looking for the apartment. We asked locals and they didn’t know where it was. We tried a door and set off an alarm then an elderly man came out of the garage looking puzzled. A helpful local spoke to him and after 5 minutes we discovered we were in the right place. He asked for money then showed us to a room. There were no instructions at all. The Internet password was stuck on the router. We tried it many times but it would not work. Off we went to find somebody. A man came to the room, took the sticker off and told us the the password was completely different to what was written!!
The apartment is very basic but it was clean with plates, cups, pans and a small amount of cutlery. No other cooking utensils at all. There were no hand towels, no dish drying towels and the fridge was not plugged in which we discovered later that night.
There were city noises. Loud karaoke until very late and the neighbours laughing and talking loud until nearly 2 in the morning. The alley way is very tight and the houses on the opposite side are almost touching so you can’t open the curtains without being overlooked.

  • 悟 from Japan – 12 January 2024 (8/10)

Room is clean. There are many good local restaurants.

What could be improved: The bathtub stopper was broken, so I couldn't fill the bathtub with hot water. Toilet paper is always in short supply, and even if you request it, they won't bring it until two or three days later. it is big problem, so I went to buy toilet paper.
