An Nam Art House Overview

Tucked away on Đặng Thái Thân Street, An Nam Art House is honestly one of those places you’d walk right past if you weren’t looking for it – which is actually part of its charm, I think. The narrow alley feels quintessentially Old Quarter, but you’re just removed enough from the main tourist chaos that you can actually sleep at night without motorbikes honking outside your window at 2am.

What struck me first was how they’ve managed to blend traditional Vietnamese architecture with contemporary art without making it feel forced or gimmicky. The lobby has this beautiful collection of local artists’ work – not the mass-produced stuff you see everywhere, but pieces that actually tell stories about Hanoi. I spent a good twenty minutes just looking at everything during check-in, which was refreshingly smooth, by the way. The staff switched between Vietnamese, English, and what sounded like French with other guests, and they knew their neighborhood inside and out. When I asked about good phở nearby, they didn’t just point me to the obvious tourist spots but mentioned this tiny place around the corner where locals actually eat breakfast.

The rooms are well, compact but thoughtfully designed – you know how some boutique hotels try to cram too much into small spaces? This isn’t that. Everything has its place, and the bed was genuinely comfortable, not just “acceptable for the price.” The bathroom surprised me with its rainfall shower, though I’ll be honest, the water pressure varied depending on the time of day. Morning showers were perfect, evening ones required a bit more patience. There’s this lovely little balcony area on the upper floors where you can sit with coffee and watch the street life below – old men playing chess, vendors setting up their stalls, kids heading to school. It’s the kind of authentic neighborhood theater you can’t manufacture.

Being in Hoàn Kiếm means you’re walking distance from everything that matters – the lake is maybe eight minutes away, the weekend night market is right there, and you can easily explore both the touristy parts and the more residential streets where real life happens. I actually found myself using the hotel as a base to dart out for meals and exploration, then coming back to recharge before the next adventure. The location hits that sweet spot where you feel connected to the city but not overwhelmed by it.

What really sets this place apart, though, is the attention to detail and the genuine hospitality. The morning coffee service isn’t just adequate – it’s actually good Vietnamese coffee, served properly. The art throughout the hotel changes periodically, so return visitors get a different visual experience. And the staff remembers you after the first day, which sounds small but makes a huge difference when you’re trying to navigate a new city. At this price point and with this level of service, honestly, it’s hard to imagine staying anywhere else in this part of Hanoi.

Reviews of An Nam Art House

  • Junko from Japan – 28 March 2025 (9/10)

    What could be improved: 上階に行くほどシャワーの圧が弱く、チョロチョロとしかお湯が出なかった。
    日中は、目の前のカフェや表通りの工事の音などが響いてくる。
    支払いはドルかベトナムドンのキャッシュのみで、集金に来たスタッフは領収証を提示しなかった。

  • Amit from India – 6 January 2025 (8/10)

location, ease of check-in and spacious rooms

What could be improved: limited cutlery and no toiletries, and even the cooking pan was not clean.
Note: getting a heavy suitcase on the 4th floor on narrow stairs was a little challenging.

  • Katy from Canada – 4 January 2025 (7/10)

    location was great

What could be improved: so many stairs, also towel were old and just one small bath towel , no hand towel and no bath mat,
Also there was a very bad smell on one of the days in the entrance which was more like sewage smell.

  • Stephanie from Australia – 15 October 2024 (9/10)

Rooms were very spacious and airconditioned. Most rooms were clean and had everything well provided. We had some issues with one room but the host was able to resolve it quickly with us. She communicated well and promptly

  • Harrison from Australia – 27 July 2024 (8/10)

I was a bit hesitant to book here due to the few reviews, but my wife still wanted to stay here because the location of the apartment was very convenient for our trip. Contrary to our concerns, the room turned out to be spacious and very comfortable. The host also thoughtfully gave us a small, lovely gift.

  • Arno from France – 27 July 2024 (9/10)

  • Perrin from France – 27 June 2024 (8/10)

J'ai réservé une chambre familiale au dernier étage. Même s'il n'y a pas d'ascenseur, les gens de la famille d'accueil sont très disposés à vous en parler. Belle vue. Pratique à déplacer. Je reviendrai lors des prochaines vacances.

  • Maddison from United Kingdom – 26 June 2024 (8/10)

Love the decoration, sweet-smelling, surrounding neibourhood here. And the host is really helpful, friendly and lovely.
