Honestly, when I first walked into Ficus Suites, I wasn’t expecting much from the narrow entrance on Ly Nam De street – you know how these old Hanoi buildings can be deceiving from the outside. But step through that door and wow, it’s like they carved out this sleek, modern space from what was probably a pretty unremarkable shophouse. The lobby’s got this understated elegance that actually feels more sophisticated than a lot of the flashier five-star places I’ve stayed at around the city.

What really sold me on this place though was the location – and I mean the real location benefits, not just “oh it’s central.” You’re literally a three-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, which means you can actually do that morning jog around the water before the motorbike chaos starts (trust me on the timing, go before 7 AM). More importantly for foodies, you’re right in the thick of the real local eating scene. There’s this incredible pho place down the block that I never would’ve found if I’d been staying in the hotel district, and honestly, being able to stumble back to your room after exploring the night markets around here is pretty perfect. The staff – and this surprised me – actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give recommendations beyond the usual tourist spots. One guy at the front desk told me about this coffee roaster on a side street that’s become my new obsession.

The rooms themselves hit that sweet spot between modern comfort and local character. Mine had these gorgeous wooden accents that felt authentically Vietnamese without being kitschy, and the bathroom was one of those rainfall shower situations that actually worked properly (you’d be surprised how often hotels mess that up). I will say the walls are a bit thin – I could hear conversations from the hallway sometimes – but it’s nothing earplugs can’t handle, and honestly, for a renovated building in this part of the Old Quarter, the noise levels were pretty reasonable. Check-in was smooth, they stored my bags without any fuss when I arrived early, and the Wi-Fi was actually fast enough for video calls, which isn’t always a given in Vietnam. The breakfast spread was solid too – proper Vietnamese coffee, fresh fruit, and enough Western options that my less adventurous travel companion was happy. At this price point and with that 9.1 rating making total sense after staying there, Ficus Suites is the kind of place that makes you feel like you found a bit of a hidden gem, even though it’s right in the heart of everything.

  Everything was nice, the room was clean and cozy, with free water, tea and instant coffee. I arrived in the middle of the night and the lovely guys at the reception let me in without problems. They were really kind and polite.
