Golden Sail Hotel & Spa Overview

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked into the Golden Sail Hotel & Spa on Hang Buom Street – I mean, you know how it is with mid-range places in Old Quarter, they can be hit or miss. But this one actually surprised me in the best way. The lobby has this warm, welcoming vibe that immediately makes you forget you’re staying in what’s essentially the heart of tourist central Hanoi. The staff genuinely seemed happy to see guests, not just going through the motions, and check-in was refreshingly smooth even during the crazy busy evening rush when half of Hoan Kiem feels like it’s buzzing with motorbikes and street food vendors.

What really won me over, though, was how they’ve managed to create this little oasis right in the thick of everything. Your room overlooks the narrow streets where you can actually watch daily life unfold – women carrying fresh herbs to the market early morning, kids heading to school, the whole neighborhood rhythm that makes Hanoi so addictive. The spa part isn’t just a fancy name either; they’ve got this small but legitimate treatment area where you can actually unwind after spending hours wandering around Hoan Kiem Lake or getting lost in the weekend night markets. The rooms themselves are well-maintained (definitely above what you’d expect for a 4-star in this location), and here’s something practical – the Wi-Fi actually works consistently, which anyone who’s stayed in Old Quarter knows isn’t always guaranteed.

Location-wise, you’re literally a five-minute walk from all the main action around the lake, but far enough down Hang Buom that you’re not dealing with the constant noise that comes with staying right on the main drags. I loved being able to duck out for morning coffee at one of those tiny sidewalk spots, then come back and actually get some quiet time. The neighborhood has that authentic feel where you’re sharing the streets with locals doing their daily shopping, not just other tourists. Sure, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury amenities or anything, but for what it is – a solid, comfortable base in one of the most vibrant parts of Hanoi – it delivers exactly what you want. The 8.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there; it’s the kind of place where everything just works the way it should, and you find yourself recommending it to other travelers without any hesitation.

  • Caroline from Ireland – 12 May 2025 (8/10)

Fantastic location in the heart of the Old Town.

What could be improved: Rooms quite small but to be expected in the location

  • Alexandra from Vietnam – 1 May 2025 (9/10)

Very central location situated right in the Old quarter so it was perfect for getting around the city and also for getting easily to guided tours. The room was also very comfortable, great bathroom and bed facilities. The staff were also very friendly and helpful.

    What could be improved: NA

  • Helen from Australia – 10 April 2025 (7/10)

The breakfast needs improvement ,need bigger cups for coffee ,The orange juice was way to sweet ,They need to put covers over their food as their was a cockroach crawling on the ham when I was there .Location was good .Room was a big size .

  • Greenwood from United Kingdom – 6 April 2025 (8/10)

Great place to stay! But please be aware of the construction that goes on in the daytime. Not a problem if you are planning to be busy in the day and just use the place to sleep

  • J from United States – 29 March 2025 (7/10)

Only bad thing was the construction at neighboring building from 8am – 5pm. Loud power tools and hammering may keep you from an enjoyable afternoon nap. Otherwise, a perfect stay in Hanoi. The manager, Jackson (I think) was very kind, and arranged a 2 day 1 night cruise at Halong Bay for me, which was perfect.

  • Susan from United Kingdom – 14 March 2025 (9/10)

In the old part of the city so close to all the things we wanted to see

What could be improved: Renovations to the next door property were noisy in the day time. Work did stop by 5pm though

  • Philippe from Canada – 8 March 2025 (9/10)

Nice small room with private terrace, good breakfast (try the banana pancakes!), excellent location in old Hanoi.

  • Andrew from United Kingdom – 25 February 2025 (9/10)

Comfortable bed. Nice shower. Central location.

What could be improved: Quite noisy when people moved around the hotel – no soundproofing. The host did the hard sale on tour options before giving you the key to your room and when I was tired and just needed a shower it was quite frustrating but you have to be polite! Breakfast was small and from a menu – one small option allowed only.
