Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Happii Homestay on that narrow little alley off Kim Mã, I wasn’t entirely sure I was in the right place. You know how Hanoi addresses can be, especially when you’re dealing with these ngõ numbers that seem to multiply like rabbits. But once you actually find number 8 (and trust me, just look for the small sign), you’ll realize you’ve stumbled onto something pretty special in Ba Dinh.

The thing about this place is that it actually feels like a homestay, not just some hotel trying to co-opt the name. The family running it – they’re genuinely involved, and I mean that in the best way possible. Not hovering, but you can tell they care about getting the details right. My room was on the third floor (there’s no elevator, just so you know), but honestly, after a day of walking around Hanoi, those stairs barely registered. The room itself was clean in that specifically Vietnamese way – everything spotless, but not sterile. Good air conditioning too, which matters more than you might think during those sticky summer months. The wifi actually worked reliably, and I say this as someone who’s been burned by “high-speed internet” promises before.

What really sold me on the place was the location, though I didn’t fully appreciate it until my second day. You’re basically tucked into this residential pocket of Ba Dinh that tourists rarely see, but you’re still walking distance from the major stuff. The Temple of Literature is maybe fifteen minutes on foot – I timed it – and you can get to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area without dealing with the chaos of the Old Quarter. But here’s the thing nobody tells you: there’s this incredible bánh mì lady who sets up her cart right at the corner of Kim Mã and the main road every morning around 7 AM. Best bánh mì I had in Hanoi, no exaggeration. The family at Happii told me about her, which is exactly the kind of local insight you’re hoping for but rarely get.

The neighborhood itself is pretty quiet at night – you’ll hear the occasional motorbike, because this is still Hanoi after all, but nothing like the constant buzz you get closer to Hoàn Kiếm Lake. I actually slept really well, which surprised me because I’m usually pretty sensitive to street noise. Breakfast is simple but done right – think Vietnamese coffee that’ll wake the dead, fresh fruit, and bánh chưng if you’re lucky enough to visit during the right season. They don’t try to do Western breakfast and fail miserably, which I appreciated.

The 8.5 rating honestly feels about right – it’s not luxury, and they’re not pretending to be. But if you want a genuine experience in a part of Hanoi that feels more like where people actually live, rather than where they just sell things to tourists, Happii Homestay delivers on that promise. Just remember to grab the business card with the address written in Vietnamese when you leave – you’ll thank me later when you’re trying to direct a taxi driver back there.

  The location was the best, I could find all the restaurants and small shops around the place. Their staff, Mr. Thang was really helpful and friendly. I’ve enjoyed its Japanese toilets seat. I recommend you highly HAPPII!
  
  What could be improved: My studio wasn’t 40m2 like in the description, it’s smaller, about 30m2 max. And I think they could improve the cleanness of my flat, I found hair and some stains in the bathroom while checking-in.
