HnH homestay Overview

Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of places in Hanoi, but HnH homestay on Hàng Chuối actually surprised me. When you first walk up to number 44, it doesn’t look like much from the street – honestly, most places in Hai Ba Trung don’t – but there’s something immediately different about how they handle things here. The owner greeted me personally at check-in, and I mean actually chatted with me about my plans, not just the usual “welcome, here’s your key” routine.

What really won me over was the location, though I didn’t fully appreciate it until my second day. You’re basically in this perfect sweet spot where you can walk to the Old Quarter in about fifteen minutes, but you’re far enough away that you’re not dealing with the constant motorbike chaos and tourist crowds. Hàng Chuối itself is one of those streets where actual Hanoians live and work – there’s a fantastic bánh mì lady two blocks down who doesn’t speak English but makes the best sandwiches I had during my entire trip, and honestly, you’d never find her if you were stuck in the backpacker district. The neighborhood gets properly quiet after 9 PM, which was perfect since I’d been staying in places where the street noise went until 2 AM.

The room itself felt more like staying at a friend’s place than a hotel, if that makes sense. Everything was clean without being sterile, and they’d thought about actual comfort details – good lighting for reading, enough outlets near the bed, water pressure that didn’t leave you standing under a trickle wondering if something was broken. The AC worked properly too, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places get that wrong. I particularly appreciated that they gave me a local SIM card and drew out walking routes on a actual paper map, pointing out which alleys to avoid and where to find the best coffee. You know what really impressed me? They remembered I was vegetarian and left recommendations for places that weren’t just “Vietnamese restaurants that happen to have tofu.” The breakfast was simple but done right – fresh fruit, decent coffee, and they didn’t try to do some weird fusion thing that pleases nobody.

The 8.5 rating makes total sense to me. It’s not trying to be fancy or Instagram-perfect, but everything works exactly as it should, and the staff genuinely cares about whether you’re having a good experience. If you’re looking for a pool or a lobby bar, this isn’t your place. But if you want to actually experience Hanoi like someone who lives here, rather than just passing through the tourist highlights, HnH gets it right. I ended up extending my stay by two nights, partly because I was comfortable, but mostly because the location let me discover parts of the city I would have completely missed otherwise.

Reviews of HnH homestay

  • Anisha from United Kingdom – 24 April 2025 (8/10)

The place is about 20-25 mins from the old quarter. The host is really nice and responsive before arriving. She met us to give the key and showed us round, if we had an issue I’m sure she’d come quickly.

Keep in mind there are 1-3 flights of stairs depending on the room, all quite steep so maybe not possible with a suitcase? We had big backpacks we brought down backwards slowly.

Our room on the 2nd floor was okay. The bathroom was compact and we are both tall but never had to duck our heads or anything. Didn’t have a problem with hot water.

There’s a small shared kitchen downstairs with a hob, air fryer and big fridge.

What could be improved: Sheets were a little damp though. Stairs a bit steep

  • Ágnes from Hungary – 13 April 2025 (8/10)

The bed was comfprtable, but the room was not perfectl clean, there was a lot of hair on the floor when we arrived. But the bed was clean and smelled good. Good waterpressure in the shower. In the shared kitchen there was an unpleasent smell, but in our room it smelled good. The owner answered quickly on whatsapp.

  • Lizaveta from Vietnam – 16 March 2025 (9/10)

A very nice accomodation. Good location, coziest room, nice landlady. It's a very good choice for a trip to Hanoi. Water in the bathroom remains hot for a long time, there is a kitchen on the ground floor with all the conveniences. Some things that may cause inconveniences depending on preferences: loud neighbours (bar) till 11pm, hard bed,but they are insignificant if you don't have any health problems with back or sleep.

  • Oria from Thailand – 12 December 2024 (9/10)

The owner is very sweet, she was smiley and welcoming and let me do a late check in as my flight arrived late. She even offered to do my laundry for free which felt very homey and welcoming:)
The place is located not far from main attractions, but far enough to have some peace and quiet.
You have many useful facilities around – a coffee place just next door, street food and even a gym 5 minutes walk.
The room is small but has everything you need for a short stay – even a table and a comfy chair to sit and work on your laptop.
Very nicely decorated! downstairs there’s a kitchen you can use with a fridge so it’s really convenient.

What could be improved: The bed was as hard as a rock, for me it was fine because I like hard mattress but if you are looking for a cozy bed thats not for you.
I could hear the other guests going up and down the stairs so loudly, plus if anyone stays above, you will hear every step they make, which made it a bit hard to have a good uninterrupted rest.

  • Elijah from New Zealand – 29 December 2023 (7/10)

    Good location.
    Shower had good pressure.
    Affordable price.
    Friendly host

What could be improved: Bed is rock hard
    Is very noisy
Stairs were very narrow and steep. Would not recommend to larger people.

  • Evgenyi from Russia – 25 December 2023 (9/10)

    Nice stay.
Owner is nice and kind, very responsive. The room is clean and have all necessary supplies. Location is very good too, this district is my favourite in Hanoi

What could be improved: Room is a bit small for 2 people and stairs tight and steep. No problem for me.

  • Tracypt from Vietnam – 30 August 2023 (9/10)

Great location – right in the city centre with walkable distance to many major venues

What could be improved: The room is small. Anyway, it's good for the price.

  • Jin from Malaysia – 15 August 2023 (8/10)

    Cute narrow cozy house.

What could be improved: I'm okay with the steep and narrow staircase but might be difficult for big sized people.

  • Maynard from Vietnam – 1 April 2023 (9/10)

The peace and quiet was just what i needed. There was no hard selling of services and i was left alone to enjoy the surroundings. It really felt like a quiet family home. Help was there if i needed it but otherwise i could just chill out.

What could be improved: Maybe another thicker blanket could have been nice.

  • Annie from United Kingdom – 15 November 2022 (7/10)

lovely location and owner was so friendly and helpful. loved that the Tv had Netflix.

What could be improved: the bed was very hard, found it difficult to sleep and hot water in the shower wasn’t consistent.
