Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first turned down that narrow alley – Ngõ 56 Vũ Miên is one of those tucked-away streets that you’d never find unless someone told you exactly where to look. But that’s actually what makes Homestay Vũ Miên so special. You’re right in the heart of Tay Ho, which locals know is where the real Hanoi happens, but you’re on this quiet little side street where the only sounds are motorbikes puttering by and maybe some cooking smells drifting from neighboring houses.

The place itself feels like staying at your Vietnamese friend’s family home – assuming your friend’s family has really good taste and knows how to make foreigners comfortable. I mean, it’s got that authentic residential vibe where you’re living among actual Hanoians, not tourist central, but they’ve clearly put thought into the details that matter. The room was spotless (and I’m picky about that), the air conditioning actually worked well – which, you know what, isn’t always a given in smaller places – and the Wi-Fi was solid enough for video calls back home. What really got me though was how the owner just casually mentioned the best bánh mì spot three streets over, the kind of local intel you can’t get from guidebooks. There’s this easy familiarity to the whole experience, like they genuinely want you to understand their neighborhood rather than just pass through it.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Hanoi like people actually live here. You’re a five-minute walk from the lake where locals do their morning exercises – I started joining the tai chi group by day three, which sounds cheesy but was actually pretty great. West Lake itself is right there, and not the touristy parts but the sections where families bring their kids to play and street vendors set up with things I’d never seen before. Getting to the Old Quarter takes maybe fifteen minutes by xe om (motorcycle taxi), or you can walk it in about twenty-five minutes if you don’t mind navigating the controlled chaos that is Hanoi traffic. I actually preferred staying here over being right in the tourist zone – you get the authentic daily rhythm of the city, then you can venture into the madness when you’re ready for it. The only minor thing is that GPS can get a bit confused in these smaller alleys, so take a photo of the address in Vietnamese on your phone. But that’s true for half of Hanoi anyway, and the owners are really responsive if you need help finding the place.

  This room was amazing and very secure, I come to Hanoi annually to visit family and plan to book this stay every time going forward!
  
  What could be improved: The hot water didn't work at first but they had a repair technician out within HOURS, they are amazing here!

  The host is friendly and quick to respond. The room i had originally booked was not available, so with my consent, the host organised alternate room in a different building in the area.
  The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable.
  The property is located on the lake front, with plenty of cafes within walking distance.
  There's an unobstructed view of the entire lake from the rooftop, perfect for watching the sunrise/sunsets.
  
  What could be improved: The accom is located away from public transport and attraction, so expect to use Grab to get around.
  The roof-top area is covered in a thick layer of dust (this is expcted in hanoi), and the dust will track onto your drying laundry.

  The property was on a good location nearby the lake. But we arrived late at night and the owner gave clear instructions to check in.. Overall a decent place to crash. They have microwaves, stove, n all so for the price it’s worth it.
  
  What could be improved: The rooms were sold out the other day so we couldn’t extend a stay. The bathroom’s drainage was bit hard to go.

  Everything! Booked one night and ended up extending for 3, cute lake outside with coffee shops. We loved the rooftop as we saw the sunset there, you can use washing machine for free too. Got netflix on the TV too!
