You know what caught me off guard about LaHomestay Phủ Doãn? I was expecting another cramped Old Quarter guesthouse, but this place actually gets the balance right between local charm and having enough space to breathe. Tucked into one of those narrow alleyways off the main Phủ Doãn street – and I mean properly tucked, you’ll walk past it twice before spotting the entrance – it’s got this quiet residential feel that’s honestly rare in Hoan Kiem. The family running it clearly put thought into the renovation; the rooms have that traditional Vietnamese aesthetic without feeling like they’re trying too hard, if that makes sense. High ceilings, which is a godsend in Hanoi’s humidity, and windows that actually open to let in some of that alley breeze.

The location is where this place really shines, though locals probably already know this area well. You’re maybe a five-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake – the real five minutes, not the “Vietnam five minutes” that somehow turns into fifteen. More importantly, you’re close enough to the weekend night market chaos but far enough that you’re not dealing with motorbike horns at 6 AM. The nearby coffee shops aren’t the touristy ones either; there’s this little place two alleys over where office workers grab their morning cà phê sữa đá, and honestly, watching the morning routine from there tells you more about Hanoi than any guidebook. The homestay folks were pretty helpful about stuff like this – not pushy with recommendations, but they’d casually mention things like which evenings the alley gets busy (apparently there’s a popular phở spot that draws crowds around dinner) or when to avoid certain streets during rush hour.

I mean, it’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi gets a bit spotty during evening hours when everyone’s streaming, and the hot water takes its sweet time in the mornings. But there’s something genuine about staying here that you miss in the bigger hotels. Maybe it’s the way they leave out thermos flasks of tea in the common area, or how the owner’s grandmother sometimes sits in the tiny courtyard peeling vegetables and doesn’t mind if you ask about what she’s cooking. The rating of 8 feels about right – it’s solidly good without being flashy, and honestly, that’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to get a real feel for this part of Hanoi. If you’re the type who needs a concierge and room service, look elsewhere. But if you want to stay somewhere that feels connected to the neighborhood rhythm – where you’ll actually remember the street sounds and the smell of morning cooking from nearby kitchens – this is worth booking.

  Great Homestay in a quiet location about 10-minutes walk from the heart of Hanoi. Lovely clean room with plenty of hot water. Would stay here again.

  Nothing since we were not given the room at all.
  
  What could be improved: We kept on contacting the property for checkin instructions but got no reply. On the day of checkin at 11:30am we were informed that the property was not available and we should either cancel it or move to another one of theirs. The other property was 7km from this one. We had specifically chosen this one because it was near the center of city. Its sad that owner did not even contact us beforehand for this and only on repeated messages and calls did he reply. We had to look for a new place at last moment and had to overpay for it.
