New Square Building Maya 36 Dao Tan Overview
You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Hanoi over the years, and New Square Building Maya totally caught me off guard. It’s tucked away on this narrow alley off Dao Tan Street – and I mean really tucked away, like you’ll walk past the entrance twice before you spot it. But honestly, that’s part of what makes it special. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the chaos of Kim Ma junction, yet when you step into this place, it’s like someone hit the mute button on the city.
The building itself is one of those sleek modern towers that seem to pop up overnight in Ba Dinh district, but the hotel occupies just part of it – which actually works in your favor because you get all the perks of a newer building without feeling like you’re in some massive tourist factory. The lobby’s small but really well done, with this clean minimalist vibe that feels more like a boutique place than your typical Vietnamese hotel. Check-in was surprisingly smooth too – the staff actually remembered my name from the booking, which doesn’t happen often around here. My room was on the 8th floor, and man, the view over the neighborhood’s rooftops with glimpses of the Red River in the distance… it’s not the postcard shot of Hoan Kiem Lake, but there’s something really peaceful about watching daily life unfold in the residential blocks below.
What really sold me on this place though is how it sits right in the sweet spot between local and accessible. You’ve got that amazing bun cha place about 50 meters down the alley – the one with no English sign where office workers line up at lunch. There’s a Circle K practically next door for late-night snacks, and you can walk to Lotte Tower in about 10 minutes if you need familiar Western food or shopping. The neighborhood feels authentically Hanoian but without the motorbike exhaust and constant honking you get closer to the Old Quarter. I actually slept through the night here, which – if you know Hanoi – is saying something. The rooms are well-insulated, and since you’re set back from the main road, you miss most of the street noise.
The only thing that might throw some people off is that it’s definitely more of a business hotel vibe than a tourist spot – you’ll see more Vietnamese guests than backpackers, and the amenities are practical rather than flashy. But honestly, after dealing with hotels that try too hard to be everything to everyone, there’s something refreshing about a place that just does the basics really, really well. The WiFi actually works, the shower has proper pressure, and the AC doesn’t sound like a jet engine. Sometimes that’s all you need.
