Rex Hanoi Hotel Overview

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked down Gia Ngu Street looking for the Rex Hanoi Hotel – it’s tucked into this narrow lane in the Old Quarter where motorbikes weave between street food vendors and the occasional taxi barely squeezes through. But you know what? That’s exactly what makes this place work so well.

The hotel itself is one of those tall, narrow buildings that somehow manages to feel spacious once you’re inside, which is typical Hanoi magic if you ask me. The lobby’s got this clean, modern vibe without being sterile – marble floors that actually stay cool in the humid weather, and the staff genuinely seems happy to see you walk in. I mean, the check-in was probably the smoothest I’ve had in Vietnam, and they didn’t even blink when I showed up at 2 AM after a delayed flight. The location is honestly perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without the chaos of Hoan Kiem Lake crowds – you’re maybe a five-minute walk from the lake, but far enough down these side streets that you don’t hear the constant honking all night. Well, you’ll still hear some motorbikes, this is Hanoi after all, but it’s manageable.

What really sold me on this place was the attention to small details that actually matter when you’re tired and jet-lagged. The rooms are compact but thoughtfully laid out – good water pressure in the shower (seriously important in this climate), blackout curtains that actually block light, and air conditioning that works without sounding like a helicopter. The beds are proper firm, which I appreciated after bouncing around Southeast Asia on mattresses that felt like hammocks. There’s this little breakfast area on one of the upper floors where you can grab Vietnamese coffee and bánh mì in the morning, and the woman who runs it remembers how you like your coffee after like two days. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building too, which isn’t always a given in these old quarter hotels where the walls are thick and the layout is, well, creative. I spent a few evenings just wandering the neighborhood – there’s this incredible bún chả place literally around the corner that locals queue up for, and a couple of decent bars tucked into alleyways you’d never find unless you were staying right here. The 8.8 rating makes sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything just works the way it should, and the price point feels honest for what you get. If you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re actually in Hanoi rather than some international hotel bubble, this is your spot.

Reviews of Rex Hanoi Hotel

  • Keith from Australia – 31 May 2025 (8/10)

A well-run polished hotel. My premium room was as expected. Staff were friendly. The hotel is in quite a good position to walk to the lake, restaurants etc. I walked the 500m or so to Train St – a bit of fun. Grab taxis were easy and reasonable.

What could be improved: The hotel has added floors post- build. The lifts only go 12 floors. The restaurant for breakfast etc is on 14th floor as is the indoor pool. The rooftop bar is on the 15th floor – good view.
I ate in the hotel restaurant on my first night. Great food but I was the only customer despite the hotel being half full. A bit boring – get a musician? Went to the roof-top bar for Happy Hour – same story – no-one. Move the bar to the ground floor? The usual over- percolated coffee. Get a coffee machine?

Very comfortable room but quite small
Great location in old quarter but just out of the very busy areas

What could be improved: Difficult to get hot water in the shower
A lot of stairs up to the restaurant so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues

Service from reception staff including Kim and new trainee Angel ( and sorry I forgot the name of 2 other senior reception ladies that was also very helpful who gave us our introduction to friendly breakfast staff to housekeeping to Roiftop Bar staff . Great WiFi and TV selections . Clean rooms . Indoor pool . Excellent breakfast . Relaxing atmosphere and in particular the central location to everything . The Rex Hotel is our go to when staying in Hanoi . They will store your bags for you also when you do that Halong Bay overnighter . We would not stay anywhere else when in Hanoi .

What could be improved: Room without window has no real space for suitcases .

The rooms were lovely and comfortable. Great location right in the heart of the old quarter.

Location was great and there's an ATM by the entrance. Bed and pillows were comfy despite the noise outside was able to sleep well. Staff were pleasant and really tried to give in to our request.
