S Central Hotel and Spa Overview
Honestly, I walked past S Central Hotel and Spa three times before I realized this narrow lane off Tho Xuong actually housed one of the nicest places I’ve stayed in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. You know how these little alleys can be – they look like they lead nowhere, but then you discover this gem tucked away where the tour groups never venture.
The thing about staying here is you’re actually in a real neighborhood, not some tourist bubble. I mean, you’re still just minutes from Hoan Kiem Lake and all that, but you’ll wake up to the sound of motorbikes puttering down the lane (it’s surprisingly quiet for Hanoi, actually) and the lady selling pho from her cart right outside. The spa part isn’t just marketing fluff either – I spent a good hour in there after walking around the city all day, and honestly, it felt like having a little retreat right in the middle of the chaos. The massage therapist knew exactly what she was doing, none of that tourist trap nonsense.
What really got me was the attention to detail throughout the place. The lobby smells like lemongrass instead of that generic hotel air freshener, and the staff – well, they remember your name after the first day, which doesn’t happen much in four-star places. My room faced the lane (I was worried about noise, but it was fine) and you could watch the whole neighborhood come alive in the morning. The bathroom was one of those rare ones where everything actually works properly – good water pressure, hot water that stays hot, towels that don’t feel like sandpaper. You know what I mean if you’ve traveled much in Southeast Asia.
The breakfast situation is solid too, though I’ll be honest, I ended up eating street food most mornings because, well, you’re in Hanoi. But when I did eat there, they had this perfect balance of Western stuff for homesick travelers and local dishes that were actually done right. The coffee alone – Vietnamese coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a machine – made me a morning person for the week I was there.
Location-wise, you’re positioned perfectly without being in the thick of the backpacker madness around Ta Hien. I could walk to the night market in about eight minutes, hit up Bun Cha Huong Lien (Obama’s place, if you’re into that) in five, but still come back to somewhere that felt peaceful. The front desk folks know all the good spots too – not just the obvious ones, but where locals actually go. They sent me to this incredible banh mi place that I never would’ve found otherwise.
I stayed during shoulder season in November, so I can’t speak to how crazy it gets during Tet or peak summer, but the 9.5 rating makes total sense. It’s one of those places that gets the basics absolutely right while adding just enough special touches to make you remember why you love traveling in the first place.

Nice location, walking distance to main attractions and good places to eat in the area. Great service! I loved the room, it was very spacious, clean and so comfortable. I arrived very late and they upgraded me, so I could have a good rest. Sophie helped me to arrange the pick-up from the airport and tours.

Staff were very accommodating and couldn’t do enough for us. One of the staff even posted a postcard for me as I was leaving Hanoi that day and organised a tour for us with little notice.
What could be improved: The fact the hotel is spread over a few buildings should be mentioned on the booking.com website. The neighbourhood can be a bit intimidating but it is a city centre location and very close to everything. Some of the bread at breakfast was stale but otherwise enjoyable and varied.Chris from United Kingdom – 24 May 2025 (10/10)

We only stayed for one night but had an excellent time, we arrived very early in the morning and because our room wasn’t ready yet they upgraded us for free to a room that was ready to allow us to check in early. The staff were all very friendly and the breakfast was great as well.
