Honestly, when I first walked into the Splendid Star Grand Hotel and Spa, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, you know how these boutique places in the Old Quarter can be hit or miss. But this little gem tucked away on Tho Xuong Lane actually surprised me. The location is pretty clever, actually – you’re right in the heart of Hoan Kiem district but on this quiet side street that somehow escapes most of the motorbike chaos. You can literally walk to Hoan Kiem Lake in about three minutes, and there’s this fantastic pho place (locals call it “pho co”) just around the corner that opens at 6 AM if you’re into that authentic breakfast scene.

What really got me was the attention to detail throughout the hotel. The lobby has this warm, understated elegance – none of that over-the-top marble everywhere vibe you sometimes get. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re dealing with jet lag and trying to figure out where to catch a taxi to the airport at 5 AM. The rooms are well-designed too – I stayed on the fourth floor and could hear the gentle hum of the old quarter below, but it wasn’t disruptive at all. Actually felt kind of charming. The spa is where they really shine though – I went in skeptical (hotel spas can be pretty mediocre) but came out genuinely relaxed. They use local ingredients in their treatments, and the therapist I had knew her stuff, spoke great English, and didn’t try to upsell me on anything.

Here’s what I think sets this place apart from other hotels in the area – they’ve managed to capture that authentic Hanoi feeling without sacrificing comfort. You’re not isolated in some international hotel bubble, but you’re also not roughing it. The rooftop restaurant gives you those Instagram-worthy views of the narrow streets and traditional shophouses, plus you can see straight to the lake on clear days. Check-in was smooth (they even helped me sort out a SIM card situation), and they’ve got this concierge who actually knows the city instead of just handing you tourist brochures. When I mentioned wanting to find good street food that wasn’t too touristy, she drew me a little map to spots where locals actually eat. That 9.3 rating makes total sense to me – it’s the kind of place where small things are done right, which honestly matters more than fancy amenities you’ll never use.

  This is my fourth stay at this property, and the staff have come to feel like family over the years. I cannot recommend this property enough! It is safe, quiet, in a lovely alley that feels like home, the breakfast is amazing delicious with lots of variety, the staff go out of their way to make you happy and comfortable and even go the extra mile to help find souvenirs and give recommendations or book services, the location is perfect and close to everything in the old quarter, the beds are comfy, and the water in the shower is nice and hot. Would definitely recommend staying here and will be back!

  Staff were excellent. Rooms left very tidy each day. Very helpful with laundry, luggage carriage, advice. very friendly.
