SQ Hang Gai hotel & Spa Overview
You know what struck me first about SQ Hang Gai? It’s actually tucked right into the heart of Old Quarter chaos, but somehow they’ve managed to create this little pocket of calm that doesn’t feel completely disconnected from the energy outside. I mean, you’re literally on Hang Gai Street – the silk street where tourists and locals alike are haggling over scarves and bags all day – but step through those doors and there’s this immediate shift. Not in a sterile, corporate hotel way, but more like… well, like someone really thought about how to make this work.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to dive deep into Hanoi life. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, which means you can catch the morning tai chi crowds before the day gets crazy, and you’re surrounded by some of the best street food in the city. I’m talking about the kind of spots where you’ll see office workers grabbing lunch, not just the touristy places (though those are fine too). The hotel sits between all these narrow alleyways where motorbikes somehow navigate through spaces that seem impossible, and you can hear the gentle hum of daily life – vendors calling out, the occasional honk, conversations drifting up from the street. It’s not quiet, but it’s not overwhelming either, especially once you’re up a few floors.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve balanced that local immersion with actually helpful amenities. The spa isn’t just thrown in as an afterthought – after spending days walking on uneven sidewalks and navigating the controlled chaos of Hanoi traffic, having somewhere to properly decompress feels essential rather than indulgent. The staff seems to genuinely know the neighborhood too, which makes a difference when you’re trying to figure out whether that pho place around the corner is worth the wait or if there’s a better option two streets over. They’re not just pointing you toward the obvious tourist spots; they actually get how the area works. Check-in was smooth without being overly formal, and honestly, with an 8.9 rating, you can tell they’re doing something right – that’s the kind of score that comes from consistently getting the details right rather than just having flashy amenities. It’s four stars that feel earned rather than aspirational, if that makes sense.

Lovely hotel, great location in the old quarter. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The pool area is great for hot days. The staff is friendly and helpful and the breakfast is great, I liked that they offered Vietnamese food! Super good value for money and a great experience all in all.
What could be improved: Nothing!Michelle from Australia – 2 June 2025 (9/10)
A great location.Right in the heart of the “Old Quarter”. Within walking distance of everything you needed.
The effort of the staff to go that little extra if you needed something. They were super friendly, always smiling.
Nothing was too hard for them.
What could be improved: The shower needed a screen of some sort.Water would go everywhere but it was cleaned next day.
Has a little trouble interpreting a map . I had to turn it upside down for it to be facing the right way.
These were only minor issues.Olivia from United Kingdom – 26 May 2025 (8/10)
Great location, perfect for seeing all the sights and popping back to the hotel easily. Staff were great and very attentive. Lovely breakfast with lots of options
What could be improved: Pool isnt huge but for a city hotel it's all you need reallyKelly from Australia – 26 May 2025 (9/10)
The location of the hotel was perfect, right in old town on Silk Road. Everything at our fingertips. Walking distance to the tourist sites.
Anh and his staff (in particular Johnny and Mei) were attentive, polite and very helpful in their dealings with us.
Breakfast was excellent a vast array of food to choose from.
Thank you for your hospitality we will be coming back to see you when we are again in Vietnam.
What could be improved: Improvement on pool cleanliness would probably be the only thing but in all fairness people were using it any way.Sebastian from United Kingdom – 19 May 2025 (8/10)
Amazing location – centre of old town
Lovely staff
Comfortable bedroom
What could be improved: Basic breakfast in uninspiring restaurant
Dark bedroom
No bar on roof – despite photos on booking.com showing cocktails
Terrible gym – we chose to stay here for the gym. Cancelled our first cheaper booking to stay here.
3 treadmills – 1 with no plug so wouldn’t turn on. 1 with a loose belt so useless. The last 1 ‘worked’ but the display didn’t. Cross trainer and bike were not much good either. No mats. 2 old leather sofas in there which need moving and making space for equipment… potential is there but terrible execution. We had to run laps of the lake instead…Emily from New Zealand – 18 May 2025 (9/10)
Amazing location right in Old Quarter but still nice and quiet. Staff were lovely and friendly.
What could be improved: Looks much newer in photos. Really minor detail as everything else was lovely but for the price was a bit older than we expected.Peter from United Kingdom – 15 May 2025 (8/10)
Nothing but I didn’t like being held up while people check the room on leaving . We had a very early flight and left at 445sm
I asked to check out night before but was told no it would be ok . Had to wait which is unacceptable and the card machine was playing upAlicia from France – 12 May 2025 (9/10)
The staff are very friendly. The location is very good. I did everything by walk.
I want to say a big thank you for Hana, she helps me to organize cruise in Halong Bay.Emma from United Kingdom – 10 May 2025 (9/10)
Fantastic location and a lovely hotel
Joanne from Australia – 10 May 2025 (9/10)
Perfect location close to everything walking distance to the lake and the night markets and the rooms are amazing. Staff were beyond nice and could not help us enough and made our stay so much better. Great breakfast.

What could be improved: Nothing it was perfect
