Thien Thai Hotel & Spa Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of places in Hanoi, and Thien Thai Hotel & Spa honestly surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked away on Nguyen Truong To street in Ba Dinh – you know, that quieter district where actual Hanoians live, not just the tourist chaos of the Old Quarter. The moment you walk in, there’s this immediate sense of calm that’s pretty rare in a city where motorbikes never sleep. The lobby has this warm wood thing going on, but not in that trying-too-hard way some boutique places do.
What really got me was how the staff actually seemed to care about the details. I mean, they remembered my name after the first day, which sounds small but makes a huge difference when you’re dealing with jet lag and trying to figure out where to get decent pho at 6am (they’ll point you to a spot two blocks down that locals hit up, by the way). The spa part isn’t just a fancy add-on either – I was skeptical because hotel spas can be hit or miss, but their Vietnamese massage therapist actually knew what she was doing. After walking around the city all day, those old wooden floors felt incredible under tired feet.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star, but with thoughtful touches that show someone was paying attention. Good water pressure – seriously important in Southeast Asia – and they’ve got blackout curtains that actually work, which you’ll appreciate when the street vendors start their morning rounds around 5:30am. The AC doesn’t sound like a dying refrigerator, and honestly, the bed was comfortable enough that I overslept twice. One thing though – if you’re a light sleeper, grab a room facing away from the main street because Vietnamese traffic starts early and ends late. The hotel’s in a residential area so it’s not terrible, but you’ll hear the occasional motorbike convoy.
What I really appreciated was being in Ba Dinh instead of the touristy spots. You’re a quick taxi ride from Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature, but you’re also walking distance from actual neighborhood life. There’s a fantastic banh mi place around the corner that doesn’t speak English but makes sandwiches that’ll ruin you for anywhere else. The hotel folks can point you toward the good stuff – they sent me to this family-run restaurant where I was literally the only foreigner, and it was exactly the kind of experience you hope for but rarely stumble into on your own.
Bottom line – if you want to experience Hanoi without feeling like you’re trapped in a tourist bubble, and you appreciate a place that gets the fundamentals right without a lot of flashy nonsense, Thien Thai delivers. That 9.4 rating isn’t just people being nice; it’s earned through dozens of small things done well rather than one or two big gestures.

Great location walking distance to everything you want to see and do. But on a fairly quiet street. The staff and the manager named Hero are phenomenal. They go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need and are comfortable. Breakfast is very good with lots of options both Asian and Continental. And the shower was hot and very good water pressure!
