Phan Đình Phùng really is something special – it’s this tree-lined avenue that feels completely different from the chaos you’ll find around Hoan Kiem Lake. The French colonial villas here are gorgeous, and honestly, walking to the hotel each evening felt like stepping into a different era. You’re still in Ba Dinh district, so you’re not exactly in the middle of nowhere, but it’s refreshingly calm compared to the Old Quarter madness. The hotel itself sits right among these old buildings, and while it’s clearly newer construction, they’ve done a decent job making it blend in. Check-in was smooth enough – the staff spoke good English and seemed genuinely helpful, though I did notice they get pretty busy during Vietnamese holidays.

The rooms are… well, they’re fine. Clean, comfortable beds, decent air conditioning (which you’ll definitely need if you’re visiting between May and September). Nothing fancy, but everything works. I mean, it’s a solid 4-star place, not the Metropole, so adjust expectations accordingly. What really won me over was how quiet it actually gets at night. Hanoi can be relentless with the motorbike symphony, but back here on Phan Đình Phùng, you might actually hear birds in the morning instead of honking. The windows are pretty good at blocking street noise, and since it’s not on a main thoroughfare, there’s just less of it to begin with.

You’re about a 15-minute walk to Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum if you’re into that sort of thing, and the Temple of Literature is even closer. But honestly, what I loved most was being able to walk down to the lake area for dinner and street food, then come back to this peaceful bubble. There’s a little café right across the street that does excellent Vietnamese coffee – the owner recognized me by day three, which felt pretty nice. Parking can be tricky if you’re renting a motorbike (most places in Hanoi are), but the hotel staff will help you figure it out. The breakfast is standard hotel fare – nothing to write home about, but it’ll fuel you up for temple-hopping or whatever’s on your agenda. Overall, it’s the kind of place that grows on you. Not flashy, not perfect, but if you want to experience Hanoi without feeling like you’re camping in the middle of a construction site, this little corner of Ba Dinh district is pretty sweet.
