2′ to Hoan Kiem Lake Apartment – Heart of Old Quarter – Netflix Overview
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places around Hoan Kiem Lake, and this apartment on Nguyen Huu Huan Street hits that sweet spot between being right in the action without feeling like you’re sleeping in a tourist trap. The name’s honestly a bit much – I mean, who puts Netflix in their hotel name? – but they’re not lying about those two minutes to the lake. I timed it one morning when I was rushing to catch the sunrise tai chi sessions, and yeah, you can literally see the water from the end of the street.
The Old Quarter can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re getting into, but this spot actually works in your favor. You’re close enough to Duck into those tiny alleyways where locals eat pho for breakfast (there’s this place about 50 meters away that doesn’t even have a sign), but far enough from the weekend night market chaos that you can actually sleep. Well, sort of – this is still Hanoi, so you’ll hear motorbikes at all hours, but honestly you get used to it faster than you’d think. The building itself is one of those narrow French colonial things that’s been converted, so don’t expect a fancy lobby or anything. You punch in a code and walk up some steep stairs, which I actually preferred to dealing with hotel staff every time I came and went.
What surprised me was how thoughtfully set up the apartment was. I mean, it’s not luxury by any stretch – the rating reflects that – but someone clearly thought about what travelers actually need. The WiFi works well enough for Netflix (hence the name, I guess), there’s a decent kitchen if you want to try cooking with ingredients from Dong Xuan Market, and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing on your roof. The shower pressure is better than half the four-star hotels I’ve stayed at in Southeast Asia, which honestly might be the most important detail in this whole review. You know what really sold me though? The windows actually open, and you get these glimpses of daily life – people hanging laundry, street food vendors setting up their tiny plastic stools, the organized chaos that makes the Old Quarter feel alive. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, and the seven-point-something rating probably reflects some of the quirks you’ll find in a converted apartment, but if you want to feel like you’re actually staying in Hanoi rather than just visiting it, this place delivers on that promise.
