54 homestay Van Mieu Overview

You know what struck me first about 54 homestay Van Mieu? It’s tucked away in this narrow alley – Ngõ Lương Sử B – that you’d probably walk past three times before spotting the entrance. But that’s actually what makes it special. While everyone’s fighting for rooms near the Old Quarter chaos, you’re sleeping in this quiet residential pocket of Dong Da where locals are just… living their lives.

The homestay itself feels more like staying at your Vietnamese friend’s family place than some sterile hotel. I mean, it’s got that 4-star comfort level – decent WiFi, clean bathrooms, AC that actually works during Hanoi’s brutal summers – but without the corporate vibe. The owners clearly put thought into the details. There’s this little communal area where you can grab Vietnamese coffee in the morning (honestly better than most cafés I tried), and they’ve got these traditional wooden accents mixed with modern touches that don’t feel forced. The rooms are compact but smart – everything you need is there, though if you’re the type who spreads luggage everywhere, you might feel a bit cramped.

Location-wise, here’s what the booking sites won’t tell you: you’re actually perfectly positioned between the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu – hence the name) and the city center, but far enough from Hoan Kiem Lake that you won’t hear motorbikes revving at 5 AM. The temple is maybe a 7-minute walk, and there are these fantastic local eateries along the way that tourists rarely discover. I’m talking about the kind of phở joints where you’re the only foreigner and bowls cost 30,000 dong instead of 80,000. Getting to the Old Quarter takes about 15 minutes by taxi or motorbike – longer during rush hour, but honestly, everything in Hanoi takes longer during rush hour.

The 8.9 rating makes sense when you consider what you’re actually getting for the price point. It’s not luxury, but it’s thoughtful hospitality in a neighborhood where you’ll see kids playing in the alley and grandmothers setting up tiny plastic stools for evening tea. The family running it speaks decent English and they’re genuinely helpful with directions, restaurant recommendations, that sort of thing. One small heads up though – the alley can get pretty dark at night, so download an offline map or screenshot the route from the main street. And if you’re arriving with big suitcases, just know you’ll be maneuvering through some tight spaces.

What really sold me on this place was sitting on their little balcony area one evening, watching the controlled chaos of Vietnamese family life unfold below while being close enough to walk to major sights but removed from the tourist madness. If you want authentic Hanoi neighborhood vibes with actual comfort and cleanliness, this hits that sweet spot perfectly.

Reviews of 54 homestay Van Mieu

  • Lucy from United Kingdom – 14 April 2025 (9/10)

A fantastic value for money place to stay. Super spacious and fantastic facilities. Once you find the property, it’s super easy to find and not an issue whatsoever for future ventures. It was also nice to stay a decent walk away from the Old Quarter – which is super busy. Temple of Literature and Train Street are only short walks away, which was ideal for us. Overall, would recommend and the host family were always happy to see us.

  • Aleksandras from Lithuania – 27 February 2025 (9/10)

    Modern, clean, cozy

What could be improved: It’s in a dark and dirty alley, but once you get to the property it feels like home right away

  • Tomer from Netherlands – 6 January 2025 (9/10)

Very nice room in a very nice location. Though very central, this area is very quiet, away from all the noisy traffic. The hosts were also very friendly.

What could be improved: Wifi was poor, shower not always warm.

  • Dominik from Germany – 3 January 2025 (9/10)

Friendly owner. Elevator available. Spacious room. Well equipped. Leaving luggage before and after the stay was no problem at all. Good location in general (though actually a little difficult to reach because of the underground construction at the main street).

What could be improved: Not so easy to reach the house because of the current construction site. And well, there were strange holes in the ceiling 🤔

  • Christina from Germany – 6 December 2024 (9/10)

What a hidden gem!!! I stayed in the French quarter on a previous trip and tried to avoid that area on this one for many reasons. We absolutely loved the neighbourhood with many restaurants and cafés, right next to the temple of literature and close to many other tourist attractions.
Room was clean and spacious and quiet during sleeping hours. We extended our stay of 3 nights for 2 more nights. The family running the homestay is so handsome and lovely.

  • Tatiana from Italy – 16 November 2024 (9/10)

Very clean, kid staff, room like in the photo!

What could be improved: No complaints

  • Jessica from Germany – 9 November 2024 (9/10)

It was great! The room was clean and comfortable and the hosts (the couple, the sisters and the mother) were incredible nice and welcoming! Communication via whatsapp or in person worked well 🙂 Would definitely recommend
