Anise Hotel & Spa Hanoi Overview
You know what struck me first about the Anise Hotel & Spa? It’s tucked away on Quan Thanh Street in a way that feels almost secret – like you’ve discovered something the tour groups haven’t figured out yet. I mean, Ba Dinh district isn’t where most travelers end up, but honestly, that’s exactly why this place works so well. You’re a five-minute walk from the Temple of Literature, and the whole area has this quieter, more residential vibe that lets you actually breathe between sightseeing marathons.
The hotel itself is one of those thoughtfully designed places where someone clearly sweated the details. The lobby smells like lemongrass and sandalwood (probably from their spa treatments drifting through the building), and there’s this subtle Vietnamese aesthetic that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. My room on the third floor had these gorgeous wooden shutters that actually blocked out the morning light – something you’ll appreciate if you’re dealing with jet lag. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious for Hanoi, with a rainfall shower that had proper water pressure. Small thing, but when you’ve been walking around the Old Quarter all day in humid weather, it matters more than you’d think.
What really sets this place apart is how the staff seems to know the neighborhood inside and out. The front desk guy – I think his name was Minh – gave me directions to this tiny bun cha place three blocks away that I never would have found otherwise, and it ended up being one of my best meals in Vietnam. The spa downstairs is legit too, though I’d book treatments in advance since they only have a few rooms. I got a traditional Vietnamese massage after a particularly brutal day of temple-hopping, and honestly, it saved my lower back. The whole hotel stays pretty quiet even though you’re still in the city – Quan Thanh Street doesn’t get the motorbike chaos you’ll find closer to Hoan Kiem Lake, so you can actually sleep with the windows cracked open. Check-in was smooth, they stored my luggage without any fuss when I arrived early, and the WiFi worked perfectly throughout the building (tested it extensively while catching up on emails by the small rooftop terrace). It’s not a flashy place, and it’s definitely more intimate than those big international chains, but that’s exactly why it feels like you’re staying somewhere special rather than just passing through.
