Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first turned down Phố Đặng Tất – it’s one of those narrow Ba Dinh streets that you’d miss if you weren’t specifically looking for it. But the Azalea Apartment caught me completely off guard in the best way possible. The building sits tucked between traditional Vietnamese shophouses, and there’s something really charming about how it blends modern comfort with the authentic neighborhood vibe. You know what I mean? It’s not trying too hard to be fancy, but everything just works.

The location is actually brilliant once you figure out the lay of the land. Ba Dinh isn’t touristy like the Old Quarter – it’s where actual Hanoians live and work, which means you get those genuine moments like watching office workers grabbing their morning pho from the corner stall or elderly locals doing tai chi in the small park nearby. The Presidential Palace is maybe a ten-minute walk away, and you can easily reach the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum without dealing with the chaos of tourist buses (though honestly, early morning is still your best bet for that). What really sold me was how quiet it gets at night – Ba Dinh has this residential calm that’s pretty rare in Hanoi, especially compared to staying near Hoan Kiem Lake where the motorbike symphony never really stops.

The apartment itself feels like someone actually lives there, not like a sterile hotel room. The owner clearly put thought into the details – proper blackout curtains that actually work, a coffee setup with local beans, and a bathroom that doesn’t make you wonder about the water pressure. I mean, the shower was consistently hot, which is honestly more than I can say for some five-star places I’ve stayed in Southeast Asia. The 9.5 rating makes total sense when you experience it firsthand. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – no lengthy forms or upselling, just genuine hospitality. The Wi-Fi was solid throughout my stay, which matters when you’re trying to navigate Hanoi’s wonderfully confusing street system or video call home. One tiny thing – the air conditioning unit makes this soft humming sound that actually became kind of soothing after the first night, but light sleepers might want to pack earplugs just in case. The whole experience felt more like staying at a friend’s well-appointed place rather than a typical hotel, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you’re exploring a city as intense and rewarding as Hanoi.

  Apartment was spacious and had everything I needed including a table, kitchen, AC, fan, smart TV and washing machine. The host Quyen went above and beyond to provide a comfortable stay. The location is in a quiet street close to the West Lake, with tons of restaurants nearby and it isn't as chaotic and touristy like the Old Quarter.

  We loved our stay in Hanoi! This was by far the cleanest and most comfortable place we've stayed in Vietnam, it had everything we needed. We also loved the quiet location away from the crowds, but still close enough to walk to the old town. The host was really helpful and provided us with great eating and sightseeing recommendation. We had some really great meals in places which we would have otherwise overlooked. Communication was great before and throughout our stay. We would definitely stay here again next time we're in Hanoi!
