Canary Hotel Overview
Honestly, the Canary Hotel caught me off guard in the best way possible. I’d walked past it a dozen times on Vu Huu Loi Street without really noticing – it’s tucked into this narrow stretch in Hai Ba Trung that feels more residential than touristy, which is actually perfect if you want to experience Hanoi without the constant vendor calls you get around the Old Quarter. The building itself has this understated elegance that screams quality without being flashy about it, and when you step inside, there’s this immediate sense of calm that’s pretty rare in a city that never really sleeps.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve nailed the balance between local character and genuine comfort. The rooms are spacious by Hanoi standards – I mean, you can actually open your suitcase without having to climb over it to get to the bathroom. The beds are properly firm (thank god, because some places here think soft equals luxury), and the air conditioning works quietly, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to sleep through the symphony of motorbikes that starts around 5 AM. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood, too – not just the obvious tourist spots, but where to find the best banh mi at 6 in the morning or which alley has the pho place that locals actually eat at. You know what surprised me most? The soundproofing. Despite being on a street that gets busy during rush hour, I barely heard the traffic from my room on the third floor.
The location is honestly one of those hidden advantages that takes a day or two to fully appreciate. You’re close enough to walk to Hoan Kiem Lake in about fifteen minutes, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the chaos of Hang Ma Street or the backpacker crowds around Ta Hien. There’s a little coffee shop right around the corner where the owner speaks perfect English and makes the kind of Vietnamese coffee that ruins you for the tourist versions, and the morning market two blocks over is where actual families do their shopping – not a souvenir stall in sight. Parking can be tricky if you’re renting a motorbike (the street’s pretty narrow), but the hotel staff will sort you out with a spot nearby. I stayed here during Tet season when half the city shuts down, and while some hotels felt abandoned, the Canary kept running smoothly – hot water, daily housekeeping, even helped me find an open restaurant on New Year’s Day. It’s not the fanciest place in Hanoi, but it’s the kind of spot where everything just works, and you end up feeling like you’ve discovered something special rather than just booked another hotel room.

Reviews of Canary Hotel
K from Saudi Arabia – 13 January 2025 (9/10)
The place was good, it was calm and in a good neighborhood in the city where we could walk around to see things. The staff were nice and helpful. The room was clean as well. It was great.
What could be improved: Nothing specifically, I think everything was good, the only thing they could add is more options for the breakfast, we didn't have different things to choose from to eat, we only had to take one or two things we liked.Aleksandra from Poland – 31 December 2024 (8/10)
We enjoyed our stay at Canary Hotel. The hotel’s main advantage was the location – not exactly in the main tourist area but close to all the monuments. The room was pretty and matched the photos. The staff was helpful.
What could be improved: Breakfasts were average and there was not a lot to choose from. There was no description provided to the dishes, making us not know what were eating.Andy from United Kingdom – 4 November 2024 (8/10)
Clean, staff great. Hot water on top floor which was great.
Room was modern. Great price. Near train street.
What could be improved: Pillows were hard. Location quite far out from centre.Ap from Australia – 8 July 2024 (8/10)
Quiet corner of a small street so not easy to locate from taxi but perfect for a good night sleep, staff or next door could be loud early morning though.
Breakfast is perfect for us, both Vietnamese and continental choices, lovely sunny room with excellent view over the city, staff is very friendly and helpful. Bonus for breakfast quality and staff:)Ray from Australia – 21 March 2024 (9/10)

Friendly staff
What could be improved: We got a real "no-view-room". Afterwards we learnt that in vietnam some rooms really have no window. So be careful when chosing the room. For us it was a bit strange to have no sunlight but on the other hand, it was very quite and good to sleep over the jetlag. 🙂Thuy from United States – 27 April 2023 (7/10)
What could be improved: price was charged for breakfast but there was not a breakfast as advertised
