Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of places in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and Golden Sunshine Villa Hotel honestly surprised me in the best way possible. When you first walk up to 68 Hàng Trống Street, you might think “wait, this narrow alley?” – but that’s actually part of what makes it special. You’re literally steps from Hoàn Kiếm Lake (I mean, you can hear the morning tai chi crowds if you open your window early), but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the constant motorbike symphony that plagues some of the main drag hotels.

The staff here – and I know this sounds cliché – actually remember your name after day one. The front desk guy, Minh, somehow knew I liked my coffee strong and would have it ready before I even asked. That 9.1 rating makes sense when you experience little touches like that. The rooms are what I’d call “thoughtfully renovated” – they’ve kept some of the old Hanoi charm (high ceilings, those gorgeous wooden shutters) while adding modern stuff that actually works. The AC doesn’t sound like a freight train, the shower has proper pressure, and honestly, the beds are surprisingly comfortable for a boutique place. I was expecting firm Vietnamese-style mattresses, but these hit that sweet spot.

What really sold me though was the location knowledge the staff shared. Instead of pointing me toward the obvious tourist traps, they steered me to this incredible bún chả place about three minutes away on Hàng Mành Street – no English sign, just locals crammed around tiny plastic stools. And when I mentioned wanting to avoid the weekend crowds at the night market, they suggested hitting Hàng Chiếu Street on Thursday evenings instead. You know what I mean? That’s the kind of insider stuff you can’t Google. The hotel itself sits in this perfect pocket where you can walk to everything – the cathedral, the opera house, even that famous train street (though honestly, it’s gotten pretty touristy) – but you’re on a quieter stretch where you can actually sleep at night. Well, mostly quiet. This is still Hanoi, so expect some early morning food cart activity, but it’s more charming than annoying. The breakfast spread isn’t huge, but they do this fantastic Vietnamese coffee setup and the phở they serve is legitimately good – not hotel-food phở, if you know what I mean. My only minor gripe is that the elevator is pretty small, so if you’re traveling with massive suitcases, you might be taking a few trips. But honestly, for a four-star place in this part of the city with service that feels more like staying with knowledgeable friends than a typical hotel, Golden Sunshine Villa gets it right.

  The staff was incredibly helpful and kind. They helped finding good places to eat, not getting scammed by people and even ordered a raincoat for my motorbike online and got it delivered to the hotel for me. Also, they were always reachable on whatsapp if i needed some quick help. Really really great staff!
  
  Breakfast was very simple but good. The location is quite good.
  
  What could be improved: The room could have been a bit cleaner, but it was ok. Every morning, I saw the cleaning-personnel barefoot chilling on their phones in the guest-rooms they were cleaning. That was a bit weird… I didn't want them to do that in my room.

  We had a great time staying at the Golden Sunshine. Kevin, the manager and his team were extremely helpful during our stay. He helped us with arranging the transports at a reasonable price! He even helped us with a gold advice to walk instead of renting a scooter – glad we listened because we had a great time walking through different streets of Old Quarters. I'll stay here again during my next visit to Ha Noi!

  Good location, quiet, very helpful staff. They organised a tour for us, that was perfect. Also helped finding other accommodation nearby, since this hotel was fully booked when we arrived from the 3 days tour. Our luggages were stored and forwarded to the new hotel by that time.

  The location is fabulous. It is off the beaten track just a bit, so one can escape traffic noise and hecticness. However, it is a five-minute walk into "the busy" and the street itself has cute restaurants and coffee shops. The room was shockingly large and had a separate living room and kitchen. The in-room washer/dryer combo was a nice touch (even if each cycle takes 2-3 hours).
  
  What could be improved: I would not book services at the spa (which is actually in a different building).
