GRAND HOTEL du LAC Hanoi Overview

You know what struck me first about the Grand Hotel du Lac? It’s how they managed to squeeze genuine luxury into this narrow slice of Old Quarter real estate on Nha Chung Street. I mean, you’re literally steps from Hoan Kiem Lake – and I’m talking about the good side, where you can actually see the water through the trees, not buried behind some concrete monstrosity. The building itself is this interesting mix of French colonial bones with modern Vietnamese touches that actually works, which honestly surprised me because that combo usually feels forced.

The staff here gets it in a way that’s rare for Hanoi hotels. They’re not just polite – they’re genuinely helpful without being pushy, and several of them know the neighborhood well enough to steer you toward that incredible bun cha place on Hang Manh (it’s unmarked, you’d never find it otherwise) or tell you which entrance to use for the Temple of Literature when it’s crowded. The rooms are what you’d expect from a proper 5-star – spacious by Vietnamese standards, quiet despite being in the heart of everything, and the beds are actually comfortable, not those rock-hard mattresses you sometimes get even in fancy Asian hotels. The bathrooms have those deep soaking tubs that make sense after a day of walking around Hanoi’s uneven sidewalks.

What really sets this place apart though is the location intelligence. You’re on Nha Chung, which means you can walk to the lake in two minutes, but you’re also positioned perfectly to duck into the real Old Quarter maze – Hang Bac for silver jewelry, Hang Gai for silk, all that good stuff – without dealing with the tourist circus around Hoan Kiem’s main drag. The hotel’s breakfast setup is solid (proper coffee, not just instant, plus they do a decent pho if you want to start Vietnamese), and they’ve got this rooftop situation that’s actually worth visiting around sunset. I’ll be honest, the pool is more decorative than functional – you’re not doing laps – but it’s a nice place to decompress with a drink after battling Hanoi traffic. The concierge can sort out train tickets to Sapa or Ha Long Bay bookings without the usual runaround, which saves you a trip to the tourist district. One small thing – the elevators are a bit slow, but that’s pretty standard for these converted colonial buildings. Overall, it’s the kind of place that makes Hanoi feel manageable rather than overwhelming, and given that 9.5 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’ve got the formula right.

Staff were great, especially Jack who gave great recommendations, I liked that he gave a few options for things like coffee shops, so you could take a pick

What could be improved: Only mild issue was conflicting music with next door on the roof, but not really under their control

  • Gary from United Kingdom – 26 May 2025 (9/10)

The location is fab, very central for the Old Quarter. Staff are super helpful and the spa is great. Rooms are comfy and a good size. Roof top bar is a bonus too.
If basing yourself here, you can walk to a lot of the sightseeing sites. There are also a few really good food spots nearby.
They were happy to look after our luggage whilst we did an overnight trip to Ha Long Bay, which saved dragging all our bags there and back.
Special mention to the manager, Jack Duong. Really looked after us. Very attentive and on the ball – thank you

A Gem in the Heart of Hanoi – Truly Exceptional Experience

We had an amazing stay at GRAND HOTEL du LAC Hanoi. From the moment we arrived, the service was top-notch. The staff are incredibly nice, professional, and genuinely helpful, we felt truly welcomed. Without even requesting, we received a complimentary room upgrade and early check-in, which was a delightful surprise and a great start to our visit.

The room, although a bit small, was beautifully maintained and thoughtfully designed. That said, we had two minor complaints: there wasn’t enough space to hang or store clothes, and the entrance to the bathroom was through a curtain rather than a proper door, which felt a bit awkward for privacy. Otherwise, the room was comfortable, and the bed was one of the most relaxing we’ve had during our travels.

We’ve traveled extensively and often stay in boutique hotels, luxury resorts, or 4-5 star properties and I can confidently say the breakfast here ranks in our Top 10 worldwide. It wasn’t just about variety, but the quality of the food and the elegant, thoughtful presentation. Every dish felt premium and carefully prepared. If I had one suggestion, it would be to improve the pastries, they were decent, but in our opinion, about a 6/10 compared to everything else which was outstanding.

Some small details which may be relevant, the Wi-Fi speed in the room was around 220 Mbps, which is impressively fast, and the TV had around 10 English channels, which was a nice touch for international travelers.

Overall, GRAND HOTEL du LAC offers a truly memorable experience. We’ll definitely be back, highly recommended for anyone looking for quality, comfort, and exceptional service in Hanoi.
