Hanoi House Hostel & Travel Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Hanoi House Hostel & Travel on Ma May Street, you immediately get that “this place knows what it’s doing” vibe. It’s tucked right in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The staff greets you like they actually want you there — not always a given with budget accommodations — and there’s this energy that tells you they’re used to helping travelers figure out Vietnam, not just providing a bed.
The Old Quarter Magic
You know what’s brilliant about staying on Ma May Street? You’re literally surrounded by the chaos and charm that makes Hanoi special. Step outside and you’re immediately in the maze of narrow streets where motorbikes weave between street food vendors and tiny plastic stools. The location score of 9.7 isn’t just numbers — couples especially seem to love it here, rating it 9.9 for romantic trips. I mean, there’s something pretty magical about exploring those lantern-lit alleys together, then ducking back to your three-star base when the sensory overload gets too much.
Sleep and Comfort
Here’s where this place actually surprised me — the beds are genuinely comfortable. When you’re dealing with hostels and budget hotels in Southeast Asia, you sort of brace yourself for rock-hard mattresses, but guests consistently rave about getting proper sleep here. Each room feels thoughtfully put together rather than just functional, and there’s decent soundproofing considering you’re in one of the busiest parts of the city. The air conditioning works well too, which you’ll appreciate after spending hours wandering around in Hanoi’s humidity.
Breakfast Worth Waking Up For
The breakfast situation here is actually pretty impressive for a three-star spot. They’ve got continental options, but also vegetarian and vegan choices — something that can be tricky to find in Vietnam if you don’t eat meat. The buffet setup means you can fuel up properly before heading out to explore, and they even do breakfast to go if you’re catching an early bus or joining a tour. It’s not fancy, but it’s substantial and covers all the basics you need to start your day right.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how they balance being a hostel with actually helping you experience Vietnam. The “& Travel” part of their name isn’t just marketing — they genuinely seem invested in making sure you see the best of the country. The 8.1 rating reflects guests who appreciate getting solid value without sacrificing location or comfort. You’re paying for a bed in prime real estate, but you’re also getting staff who know the area, decent amenities, and that rare thing in budget travel — a place that feels welcoming rather than just cheap. For exploring Hanoi’s Old Quarter, honestly, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better base.
Early hotels booking in Hanoi secures VIP water puppet seats, countryside scooter tours, and pottery workshops in Bat Trang.

The location of the hotel or the service attitude of the staff are very good, but the hotel gave me a smell in my room without windows.

Great location in the middle of Old Town, very close to Beer street, 5-10 min distance to lake. We booked via booking.com, it was cheaper than in person. We got room above the reception, we were afraid of that room, because wintow was just to reception area, but on the end of the day it was very good room. Good TV, with Netflix, large space. We booked trip to Ha Long bay right on desk next to reception.

Location ! Clean and comfy bed! Nice balcony
What could be improved: NothingSelen from Turkey – 11 December 2024 (9/10)
We stayed for 5 nights in a room with balcony, the room was clean and spacious, the bathroom was big, the bed was comfortable, dark curtains help sleep well, staff was friendly and helpful.
What could be improved: Room doors lock with ordinary keys rather than card keys. But there were survailance cameras on all floors so it felt safe…Kl from Singapore – 8 December 2024 (7/10)
Friendly staff, personally messaged me to confirm my stay before I arrived.
What could be improved: The booking.com description says that breakfast is included, but in reality the hotel does not serve breakfast.Ck from Malaysia – 30 November 2024 (9/10)
The location is very good. Room is clean and comfortable
Lyndsey from United Kingdom – 22 November 2024 (9/10)
Really lovely facilities and big dorm space.
What could be improved: The beds in the 6-bed dorm don’t have a wall in-between, so you are sleeping side-by-side with another bunk bed. In my case I was next to someone listening to a phone on loudspeaker which made it hard to sleep. A plywood wall or a divider would improve things thereLaura from Austria – 7 November 2024 (9/10)
Location was great! Rooms were good and big. Staff was very friendly and helpful, they even had a booking office in the hotel and helped us booking our next bus.
What could be improved: Its already a bit older but still everything works and was clean.
Unfortunatly we did not have a double bed but two extra beds. We put in the reservation that we would prefer a double bed. Probably there was no more free beds as we booked quite last minute. So make sure to book early enough when you prefer a double bed.Ioanna from Greece – 27 October 2024 (8/10)
the room has a big bed and one small double in the floor also has a balcony to see the view of old Hanoi. It is very central in the heart of old Hanoi with a tons of bar cafes and restaurants around. Also the beer street is 50m away. The bathroom had 24hours hot water
What could be improved: The a/c is infront of the bed and when you sleeping is too cold
