The name actually makes perfect sense once you find it tucked away on the third floor of a building on Hàng Bạc Street – I mean, you literally have to hunt for this place. But honestly, that’s part of its charm. The entrance is sort of hidden between shops selling silver jewelry (Hàng Bạc translates to Silver Street, which explains all the glittering storefronts), and there’s this narrow staircase that leads up to what turns out to be one of the most thoughtfully designed boutique hotels I’ve stumbled across in the Old Quarter.

The location is actually brilliant once you get your bearings. You’re right in the heart of Hoan Kiem district, maybe a three-minute walk to the lake itself, but because you’re up on the third floor, you escape most of the street noise that can drive you crazy in this part of town. Well, you’ll still hear the occasional motorbike symphony – this is Hanoi, after all – but it’s manageable. The staff clearly knows their neighborhood inside and out; they pointed me toward this incredible phở place just around the corner on Hàng Bồ that I never would’ve found otherwise. No English sign, just locals slurping noodles at tiny plastic stools, which is exactly what you want.

What really got me was the attention to detail throughout the place. The rooms blend traditional Vietnamese elements with modern comfort in a way that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. I’m talking handwoven textiles, local artwork that’s actually good, and bathrooms with rainfall showers that have proper water pressure – something you can’t take for granted in older buildings here. The common areas have this lived-in elegance, if that makes sense. There’s a small rooftop terrace where you can actually see glimpses of Hoan Kiem Lake between the buildings, and they serve Vietnamese coffee up there that’s strong enough to wake the dead. The 9.5 rating honestly doesn’t surprise me – everything from check-in to the daily housekeeping felt genuinely thoughtful rather than just efficient. Even little things like having proper hangers in the closet and outlets positioned where you actually need them. The owner clearly spent time thinking about what travelers actually want versus what hotels think they want. If you’re the type who likes discovering places that feel more like staying with a well-connected local friend than checking into a standard hotel, this is your spot.

  Meine Freundin und ich kamen leider sehr spät nach dem Flug in Hanoi an, der Kontakt zu den Gastgeberinnen war aber sehr gut und haben trotz später Stunde extra gewartet, bis wir einchecken. Das Hanoi Mystery ist sehr gemütlich eingerichtet und hat alles was man braucht um ein paar schöne Tage in Hanoi zu verbringen. Die Lage ist außerdem sehr gut, man erreicht alles schnell zu Fuß (Nachtmarkt, See etc.) 😄👞

  j'aime vraiment le look vintage de cet appartement et aussi le calme même s'il est situé en plein centre. De plus, il n'y avait que quelques pas pour atteindre la rue de la bière Ta Hien et le lac Hoan Kiem. Le propriétaire est très gentil et parle bien anglais, elle nous a même préparé des mandarines à déguster pendant notre séjour ici.

  Booking this room for a very reasonable price and highly recommend this place because IT’S TOO CUTEEE TO HANDLE. I love their decorations so much, also there are free water and fruits when you come here. The owner is very careful since when I had a headache during the trip, she always keeps track to make sure that I’m okay and she also has really good recommendations about places to go because she was a tour-guider.

  Location and host were very nice. It looked nice at first glance, nicely furnished.
  
  What could be improved: The mattress was very stiff and the road to the apartment was very dark and we saw 7 cockroaches on our way up to the apartment. Walls were covered with mold. It was a bit disappointing after all the 10 stars reviews we saw here.
