Hanoi Solo Hostel Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Hanoi Solo Hostel on Ma May Street, you immediately get that “I’m in the right place” feeling. This three-star spot sits right in the thick of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and honestly, the location alone makes it worth considering. The building has that classic narrow Vietnamese architecture — you know, the kind where you wonder how they fit so much into such a slim space. It’s clean, well-maintained, and the staff actually seem happy to see you, which isn’t always a given at budget-friendly places.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s the thing about Ma May Street — you’re literally surrounded by everything that makes Hanoi special. I mean, step outside and you’re immediately in the maze of the Old Quarter, with street food vendors practically at your doorstep and those iconic narrow houses stretching in every direction. Hoan Kiem Lake is just a few minutes’ walk away, which is perfect for morning jogs or evening strolls when the city cools down. The couples who stay here seem to really get it (they rate the location 9.3), and I can see why — there’s something romantic about wandering these ancient streets together, discovering hidden cafes and local restaurant tucked into century-old buildings.

The Room Experience

The room setup is pretty straightforward but thoughtfully done. You’re not getting high-end amenities here, but everything works as it should — the AC keeps things comfortable during Hanoi’s sticky summers, and the beds are actually decent quality. What I appreciate is that they’ve managed to maximize the space without making it feel cramped. The windows open onto the street, so you get that authentic Old Quarter soundtrack (motorbikes, street vendors, the occasional rooster), but double-glazing keeps it from being overwhelming when you want to sleep.

Breakfast & Daily Rhythms

The buffet breakfast is honestly better than you’d expect for a place in this price range. They’ve got the usual suspects — eggs, bread, fruit — but also some Vietnamese options that actually taste authentic. I’d recommend getting down there early though, because the dining area fills up quickly and you’ll want to grab your food before heading out to explore. The timing works well since most of the Old Quarter’s attractions are best experienced in the morning anyway, before the heat and crowds really kick in.

Why Guests Love It

Look, this isn’t the fanciest place you’ll ever stay, but it gets the fundamentals right in a way that matters. The 7.9 rating reflects exactly what you’re getting — solid value in an unbeatable location. You’re paying for the privilege of being in the heart of one of Asia’s most fascinating neighborhoods, and the hostel doesn’t get in the way of that experience. The staff know the area well and can point you toward the good pho places (not the tourist traps), and there’s reliable wifi when you need to plan your next day’s adventures. Sometimes that’s all you really need.

Reviews of Hanoi Solo Hostel

  • Veronika from Slovakia – 18 May 2025 (8/10)

Location, nice staff, comfy beds with private lamps, modern interior, amazing breakfast.

What could be improved: the pressure in the shower was very low, you need to rent a towel

  • Rochelle from Taiwan – 12 May 2025 (7/10)

    What could be improved: N/A

  • Hanna from Ireland – 9 May 2025 (8/10)

The breakfast was excellent, the atmosphere in the lounge was fun

What could be improved: The noise level is upsetting from the inside lounge music to the unpleasant beats and vibration of the music on the next door bars

  • Hanna from Ireland – 26 April 2025 (8/10)

    The breakfast was excellent

What could be improved: It is on a very noisy street, plus there is loud music in the lounge

  • Isstas from Germany – 19 April 2025 (9/10)

    Friendly place,
    Everything was easy to accomplish

What could be improved: Street was very loud and crowdy. We had expected that, but it was even noisier than we thought.

  • Hanna from Ireland – 19 April 2025 (7/10)

Fantastic breakfast. The young male staff are fab

What could be improved: It is noisy. Some of the staff are unfriendly and rude

  • Kayley from Switzerland – 11 April 2025 (7/10)

Everything worked out fine, the beds were clean. There is free beer in the evening and free breakfast in the morning. Only one thing and reason why I didn't give a rating of 9 is because the bathroom in the dorm did not have a door (no door at all). You enter the bathroom and you have a separate shower and toilet, but the door of those are only those half doors for privacy, but not fully covering. So when you go to the toilet, the people hear (and smell) everything? I don't understand why there are no doors. It bothered me a lot.
    The rest was fine.

  • Donald from Canada – 25 March 2025 (9/10)

The staff were very helpful. I really liked the buffet Breakfast. The location is by the centre of "Old Town" Hanoi…and close to the night market.

What could be improved: The toilet design felt cramped…and the toilet area was not designed to use gravity to drain the water away. May be loud if you get a room facing the main street.

  • Idylle from Turkey – 14 February 2025 (8/10)

    Location
    Hygiene
    Helpful staff

What could be improved: There were no windows in the dorm
