You know what? I almost walked right past Homestays Studio Xuan Dieu the first time I was looking for it. It’s tucked into one of those narrow alleys off Xuân Diệu Street – ngách 31/46 to be exact – and honestly, that’s part of what makes it so perfect. While everyone else is dealing with the tourist chaos closer to the lake, you’re staying in what feels like an actual Hanoi neighborhood.

The studio itself is surprisingly well put together for the price point. I mean, it’s not going to win any design awards, but everything works and it’s genuinely clean, which – let’s be real – isn’t always a given in this part of town. The owner clearly knows what travelers actually need: proper WiFi (I was working remotely and had zero issues), a decent shower with hot water that doesn’t cut out after two minutes, and thank god, blackout curtains because the alley can get a bit lively in the early morning with motorbike traffic. The kitchenette is basic but functional – perfect for making coffee and storing those amazing bánh mì you’ll inevitably buy too many of from the vendor at the corner of Xuân Diệu and Quang Khanh.

What I really loved about staying here was how it dropped me right into the rhythm of Tay Ho without the expat bubble thing. You’re maybe a seven-minute walk to the lake, but you’re also surrounded by actual Vietnamese families going about their daily lives. The elderly woman who runs the little grocery store downstairs doesn’t speak much English but she’ll help you figure out laundry detergent with lots of pointing and laughing. And honestly, being slightly off the main drag means you can actually sleep at night – Xuân Diệu itself can get pretty rowdy with all the bars and cafes, but this little alley quiets down after 10 PM. The location is actually brilliant once you get oriented – you can walk to all the lakeside restaurants and that weekend night market, but you can also easily grab a xe om to the Old Quarter when you want to venture into the real chaos. Just make sure you have the address written in Vietnamese on your phone because taxi drivers will look at you blankly if you try to explain the alley system in English.
