Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the JW Marriott on Do Duc Duc street – I mean, it’s tucked away in what feels like a quieter corner of Hanoi, not right in the thick of the Old Quarter madness. But you know what? That actually turned out to be one of its biggest selling points. You’re still close enough to walk to Hoan Kiem Lake in about ten minutes, but far enough from the motorbike chaos that you can actually sleep with your windows cracked open.

The lobby hits you with this sort of understated elegance – none of that over-the-top marble everywhere that screams “look how fancy we are.” Instead, there’s this really nice blend of contemporary design with subtle Vietnamese touches that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. Check-in was smooth (they had my reservation pulled up before I even finished saying my name), and I appreciated that the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the Temple of Literature, the concierge didn’t just hand me a generic map – he told me which entrance to use and mentioned that early morning is best before the school groups arrive. That’s the kind of local insight you want from a place charging premium rates.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a 5-star Marriott, but with some thoughtful details that show they understand their location. The soundproofing is genuinely good – essential in a city where street food vendors start setting up at 5 AM. The bed was one of those cloud-like situations where you actually feel guilty about how comfortable you are, and the bathroom had this rainfall shower that I may have used three times in one day. What really impressed me though was the view from the higher floors – you get this unexpected glimpse of Hanoi’s rooftops and the way the city just sprawls out in all directions, mixing French colonial buildings with modern high-rises and traditional shophouses. The breakfast spread was honestly better than it needed to be, with a solid mix of international options and Vietnamese dishes that didn’t feel like watered-down tourist versions. Their pho was legit – which, in Hanoi, is saying something.

If I’m being completely honest, this place earns its 9.2 rating because it gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to be something it’s not. The service feels genuine rather than scripted, the location gives you the best of both worlds (luxury bubble but still connected to the real city), and there’s enough attention to detail that you notice it without it being showy. It’s the kind of place where you can recover from a day of navigating Hanoi’s beautiful chaos, then wake up refreshed enough to dive back in. For what you’re paying, that balance is exactly what you want.

  Excellent, impressive staff. The room is spacious. There are several activities to do and places to eat inside the hotel. The crib for my baby is spacious and comfy.
