The entrance is sort of understated for a five-star place, but that’s actually what I loved about it. No gaudy lobby trying too hard to impress you, just this elegant French colonial vibe that feels… well, authentic. The staff remembered my name from day two (I’m terrible with names myself, so this impressed me), and check-in was smooth – none of that awkward hovering while they figure out their computer system.

What really got me was how quiet it is once you’re inside, even though you’re maybe a ten-minute walk from all the lake action at West Lake. The rooms have these gorgeous hardwood floors that creak just slightly when you walk – the kind of creak that says “character,” not “cheap construction.” I stayed in one of their suites facing the inner courtyard, and honestly, I’d wake up to birds chirping instead of motorbike engines, which if you know Hanoi, is basically miraculous. The bathroom had this deep soaking tub that I actually used (I never use hotel tubs), and the water pressure was fantastic – hot water within seconds, none of that waiting around hoping it’ll warm up. Their restaurant does this Vietnamese-French fusion thing that could easily be pretentious, but the chef actually knows what they’re doing. I had their pho ga one morning and it was better than some street stalls I’ve tried, which is saying something.

You know what sealed the deal for me though? The concierge helped me find this little tailoring shop about three blocks away that locals use – not one of those tourist traps in the Old Quarter. And when I mentioned I was looking for good bun cha, she didn’t just point me toward the famous Obama spot (though that’s good too), but gave me directions to this family place near Giang Vo Lake that doesn’t even have a sign. That’s the kind of insider knowledge you can’t fake. The location is perfect if you want to be near the expat area without being right in the middle of the backpacker chaos – you can walk to good restaurants and coffee shops, but you’re not dealing with the noise and crowds of Hoan Kiem at night. Parking was easy too, which matters if you’re planning any day trips. I mean, it’s definitely not budget accommodation, but for what you get – the service, the location, that perfect balance of luxury and authenticity – it’s worth every dong.
