LaHomestay Hàng Đậu Overview

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to LaHomestay Hàng Đậu – I mean, it’s tucked into this narrow old quarter street where you’re dodging motorbikes every few steps. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t scream for attention. The building itself has this perfect blend of colonial architecture with modern touches that actually works, which is rare in Hanoi where so many places try too hard to be either completely traditional or aggressively contemporary.

What really got me was how the staff – and I’m talking about the owner, not just front desk people – actually knew the neighborhood. When I mentioned wanting to find good bún chả that wasn’t touristy, they didn’t just point me toward Bún Chả Hương Liên (you know, the Obama place). Instead, they walked me two blocks down to this tiny spot on Hàng Mành where locals actually eat. That’s the kind of insider knowledge you can’t fake. The rooms are surprisingly quiet too, considering you’re literally in the heart of the old quarter where the street noise usually goes until midnight. They’ve got these thick windows that actually work – I could hear the city humming below, but it wasn’t keeping me awake. The bed was firm (thank god, because Vietnamese hotels sometimes go way too soft), and the AC didn’t sound like a helicopter landing, which honestly made my week.

Here’s what I really appreciated though – the location is absolutely perfect for exploring, but not in that generic “convenient to everything” way. You’re a three-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, sure, but more importantly, you’re right in the thick of the weekend night market chaos on Fridays and Saturdays. I could literally step out the front door and be in the middle of all that energy, then retreat back upstairs when it got too intense. Plus – and this might sound weird – but the morning street food situation right outside is incredible. There’s this bánh mì lady who sets up at like 6 AM, and her bread is still warm from whatever backstreet bakery she’s connected to. The whole area smells like star anise and fresh herbs in the morning, which beats the hell out of hotel breakfast buffets. The only minor thing is that parking is basically impossible if you’re thinking of renting a car, but honestly, if you’re staying in the old quarter and driving, you’re doing Hanoi wrong anyway. This place gets what travelers actually want – authentic neighborhood vibes without sacrificing comfort, staff who treat you like a person instead of a booking number, and that sweet spot where you feel like you’re experiencing real Hanoi instead of just visiting it.

Reviews of LaHomestay Hàng Đậu

  • Anne from United Kingdom – 26 May 2025 (9/10)

Hung was brilliant from the minute we booked he was responsive to the many questions we had. The location of the property is good not far from the hustle and bustle of night market etc, but quieter than some of the streets we visited. Great having access to washing machine and dryer after 3+ weeks of travelling. The housekeeping super helpful and well stocked access to fresh towels etc. Small but had everything you need.

What could be improved: The access could be challenging if the shutters were down, but did make you feel super safe. Lovely outside area in our apartment 702 but had a very limiting view which was disturbing.

  • Dmitrii from Russia – 15 May 2025 (8/10)

The apartment is very neat and cozy. It’s located on the edge of the Old Quarter, so you can easily walk to the main attractions. There are plenty of authentic streets, markets, shops, and restaurants nearby. We really loved immersing ourselves in Hanoi’s atmosphere.

I liked that the hosts were really responsive and friendly! They made our time in Hanoi so much more special and I thank them again for their hospitality. The room was really clean and it had all the amenities you need. Check in and check out was very easy and the instructions sent were clear. I highly recommend!

  • Merilyn from Estonia – 20 April 2025 (8/10)

The apartment was cozy and had a nice balcony, it’s in a great location and it’s bigger than a hotel would have been so a great value for the money.

Great location. The apartment was really cozy and had a lovely balcony with a beautiful view of the city.

What could be improved: I liked everything about it.

  • Diaby from France – 20 February 2025 (9/10)

    The host is incredibly nice

What could be improved: Nothing. Everything was perfect

  • Alexandra from United States – 18 February 2025 (9/10)

Great location and a large spot. Self check in was very easy.
Our original booking didn’t match the apartment (they’ve since changed the photos and description). Although considered an upgrade, it didn’t have a balcony. They were very helpful to resolve the issue, so all is well that ends well!

What could be improved: The AC didn’t work very well. Luckily it was rainy so it wasn’t too big of an issue.
