The rooftop situation is actually pretty solid – I mean, they put it right in the name, so they better deliver, right? And they do. The views stretch out over the lake and you can see the red bridge and pagoda, especially nice during that golden hour when everyone’s taking their evening stroll. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know their stuff about the neighborhood. The front desk guy told me about this little alley behind Ngoc Son Temple where the street food vendors set up around 6 PM – turns out he was spot on, and it’s exactly the kind of local tip you hope for but rarely get. The rooms themselves feel more thoughtfully designed than your typical four-star setup. I had one facing the lake (worth requesting if you can), and the morning light coming through was just… well, it made the jet lag a bit more bearable, let’s put it that way.

Here’s the thing about staying right in Hoan Kiem district – you’re walking distance from everything that matters. The weekend night market is literally around the corner, and when I say weekend, I mean Friday through Sunday when they close the streets to traffic and the whole area transforms. The hotel’s location means you can duck back to your room between exploring sessions, which honestly saved me during those sweltering July afternoons. Plus, grabbing a taxi or motorbike taxi is effortless from here since drivers actually know where Cho Cau Go is – no fumbling with Google Translate or hand gestures. The 9.2 rating makes sense when you add it all up. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it nails the fundamentals while giving you that lakeside location that makes Hanoi feel manageable and magical at the same time. If you’re the type who likes to be in the thick of things but still wants a proper place to retreat to, this spot gets the balance right.

  Fantastic stay in the heart of old Hanoi. Very comfortable hotel with fantastic location. The staff is more than friendly and very professional. Special thank you on Mrs. Luna but all the reception staff, management staff, restaurant, sky bar and lobby staff are the best people of the word. Breakfast are delicious and various every day. Beautiful night view from the sky bar. We were three tims in this hotel during our trip to Vietnam and Cambodia and book this same hotel three times was best decision. If I am again in Hanoi I will book just San Grand Hotel. Thank you for all in San Grand for make our trip really the best.

  The location was very convenient, close to the lake, in the heart of the Old Quarter but on a quiet side street so no noise. The staff was exceptional, from the front desk, the restaurant staff, the doormen, and especially the tour lady. Everyone was very friendly, caring and helpful.
