Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and honestly, most of them feel like they’re trying too hard to be something they’re not. The Madelise Grand Hotel is different though – it actually lives up to that “grand” part of its name without being pretentious about it.

The location on Hang Mam is pretty much perfect if you ask me. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, which means you can grab your morning coffee and watch the tai chi crowd without fighting through tourist hordes. What I really love is that you’re close enough to the weekend night market chaos to feel the energy, but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with motorbike noise at 2 AM. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood too – they pointed me toward this incredible pho place on Hang Ga that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I needed to find a pharmacy late one evening, the front desk guy didn’t just give directions, he actually walked me halfway there.

The rooms feel more spacious than you’d expect for Old Quarter standards, and you know what really impressed me? The bathrooms actually have proper water pressure and hot water that doesn’t take five minutes to warm up. Small things, but they matter when you’ve been walking around Hanoi all day. The beds are firm (which I prefer) and the AC works well – crucial during those muggy summer months. I stayed on the fourth floor and could see slivers of the lake between buildings, which was a nice bonus. The WiFi is solid throughout the building, including in the lobby area where I ended up working a few mornings with surprisingly decent coffee from their breakfast setup.

What strikes me most about this place is how it manages to feel both polished and unpretentious. The lobby has this elegant marble thing going on, but it’s not cold or intimidating like some of the bigger hotels near the Opera House. Check-in was smooth – they had my room ready even though I arrived around noon, and they stored my luggage without any fuss when I needed to explore before my evening flight. The 9.2 rating makes sense once you’ve stayed here; it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but it does the four-star hotel thing really, really well. For the price point and location, especially if you want to be in the heart of things without sacrificing comfort, it’s honestly hard to beat.

  We traveled from very far and arrived at 9am in the hotel. We were advised by the lobby receptionist that they would let us know when a room was available earlier and to our surprise they were able to accommodate us at 11am and also upgrade our room! I really appreciate the attention and the sensibility of the staff as they noticed we were extremely exhausted from the long trip and went out of their way to accommodate us! Location is perfect (right next to bus meeting point to go to Sapa) and in the heart of Old Town.

  We stayed 3 nights at Madeline and loved it. Perfect location. Close to everything. Room very clean and the bed; SO COMFORTABLE!! The pillows too! Real bonus. For us, it was luxury on this budget trip.
  The staff is amazing and very nice. Always happy to assist you. We had an early check in with no additional charges. They have scooters to rent for the adventurous brave enough to ride in Hanoi. 🤤👌
