You know what struck me first about the Madelise Stardust Hotel? The name sounds almost too whimsical for Hanoi, but somehow it works perfectly on this narrow street in the Old Quarter. I mean, Nguyen Thai Hoc is one of those classic Hanoi addresses where you’re literally steps from Hoan Kiem Lake but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the main tourist chaos on Hang Bac or Ta Hien.

The building itself has that boutique hotel vibe that’s become pretty common in this part of town – you know, where developers take these narrow French colonial shophouses and somehow squeeze a decent hotel inside. What actually impressed me was how they handled the space constraints. The lobby’s compact but doesn’t feel cramped, and honestly, the staff here seems to have their act together in a way that some of the flashier places nearby don’t. Check-in was smooth, no weird deposit drama, and they actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give useful directions (which sounds basic but trust me, it’s not always a given).

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star in this area – not huge, but thoughtfully laid out. The AC works properly, which during Hanoi summers is basically non-negotiable, and the soundproofing is better than most places on these old streets. You’ll still hear some motorbike noise in the morning – I mean, it’s the Old Quarter, that’s just part of the deal – but nothing that kept me awake. What I really appreciated were the little touches that show someone was thinking about actual travelers: enough power outlets near the bed, decent water pressure, and a safe that’s actually big enough for a laptop.

Location-wise, you’re in that sweet spot where you can walk to everything that matters. Hoan Kiem Lake is literally a 3-minute stroll, the weekend night market is right there when it’s running, and you’ve got easy access to both the touristy stuff and the more local spots. If you want proper Vietnamese coffee, there’s a great little place just around the corner on Hang Hanh that does ca phe sua da the way it should be done. For evening drinks, you’re close enough to the beer corner madness but far enough that you can actually have a conversation.

The 8.7 rating feels about right – this isn’t a luxury resort, but it’s a well-run hotel that gets the fundamentals right. The staff genuinely seems to care about whether you’re having a good stay, breakfast is solid if not spectacular, and the whole operation feels professionally managed without being sterile. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to be in the heart of old Hanoi without dealing with some of the seedier budget options or paying resort prices for a standard room. It’s one of those places that just works, you know?
