Melia Ba Vi Mountain Retreat Overview
You know what hit me first about Melia Ba Vi? It’s that moment when you’re winding up the mountain road through Ba Vi National Park and suddenly realize you’re actually escaping Hanoi’s chaos – I mean, really escaping it, not just moving to a quieter district. This place sits at the 600-meter mark on the mountain, and honestly, the air change is immediate. You’ll smell pine trees instead of motorbike exhaust, which is kind of a big deal if you’ve been in the capital for a while.
The retreat itself feels like someone took a really good Vietnamese spa concept and gave it room to breathe. The buildings sort of cascade down the hillside – nothing too dramatic, but you get these glimpses of the valley below through the trees that make you stop and actually look around. What I really appreciated was how they kept the whole place low-key despite being a 4-star setup. The lobby doesn’t try to impress you with marble everywhere; instead, there’s this warm wood thing going on that feels right for the mountain setting. Check-in was smooth (they speak decent English up here, which helps), and parking is straightforward – you don’t have to worry about squeezing into some tiny Hanoi-style spot.
Here’s what makes this place work though: they actually understand that people come here to decompress. The spa treatments use local herbs – and I mean properly local, not just marketing speak – because Ba Vi has this whole traditional medicine history that most tourists never hear about. The rooms face either the forest or the valley, and honestly, even the forest-view ones are worth it because you wake up to bird sounds instead of traffic. The restaurant serves solid Vietnamese food without trying to be too fancy about it, plus they do a decent Western breakfast if you need familiar food after days of pho. What surprised me was how quiet it gets at night – you’re only about 60 kilometers from Hanoi’s center, but it feels like a different world entirely.
The hiking trails in the national park start basically from the hotel grounds, which is convenient if you want to explore without dealing with transportation logistics. Ba Vi’s main temple is maybe a 20-minute walk up the hill, and the views from there are honestly pretty spectacular on clear days – you can see all the way back toward Hanoi’s skyline. I’d say avoid weekends if you can though, because Vietnamese families love this area for day trips, so it gets busier. But even then, the hotel itself stays relatively peaceful since most day-trippers stick to the main temple area.
Look, this isn’t going to blow your mind with luxury, but that’s sort of the point. It’s just a really solid mountain retreat that delivers on what it promises – clean air, decent comfort, and actual distance from city stress. The 9 rating makes sense because they do the basics really well without any major drawbacks. If you’re planning to stay in Hanoi for more than a few days, honestly, a night or two up here makes the whole trip better.

Reviews of Melia Ba Vi Mountain Retreat

Amazing views of the Bavi park, with the setting the resort facilities blending well into the environment.
What could be improved: The food options were a mix between traditional Vietnamese and European food and were both slightly underwhelming apart from the Vietnamese Hotpot.Abigail from Vietnam – 21 April 2025 (9/10)
Amazing setting, beautiful pool and gym overlooking the trees. Rooms were large and comfortable and the buggy tour to the ruins was a fun addition!
What could be improved: You have to eat at the hotel restaurant but they did not tell us we needed to book a table and the restaurant staff seemed a little overwhelmed by having a full restaurant.Patrick from Netherlands – 19 April 2025 (9/10)
Great service by Thuong and Hong at the reception
What could be improved: The hotel itself does not assist with arranging transportation to the venue. This is definitely something to take note of!Kate from Vietnam – 6 April 2025 (9/10)
We had an absolutely beautiful time at the Melia Ba Vi. The setting was stunning and so peaceful, rooms were clean and comfortable and we were very well attended to throughout our stay by Tuan and his team. Special shout out to Mr Hung who took us on the golf buggy tour around the French ruins – don’t miss out on this as part of your stay!

The location for the Melia Ba Vi Mountain Retreat is really special, nestled on the side of a mountain in the jungle. Going in the "winter" months was very pleasant, as the nights were pleasantly chilly. I imagine in the humid summer months the mountain would be a real respite. I loved my room – great size (premium king), comfy bed, a desk where I could write and a nice little balcony overlooking the trees. I think, overall, the ambiance of the Melia is what you're paying for – winding stone paths, birdsong, the sense of being removed from the urban environment. I also appreciated the little details – like their eggs coming from their local chickens, and the French colonial ruins dotted around the outside of the property that you could tour. Additionally, whoever is running the bar is doing an excellent job – the cocktails I had were a real highlight! Overall, I would recommend this property, but if you have mobility issues you may need to arrange golf cart transport, as everything is uphill/downhill cobblestone paths with limited flat space.
What could be improved: While I really enjoyed my stay, there were a couple of negatives. First off, my spa experience was not good, maybe the second worst massage I've ever had. I told them I had an injury and the masseuse just went ahead and yanked on the bad joint before I could determine if she would or not (she got a little lost midway through the massage as well, as evidenced by five minutes of head patting that did nothing for me except make me want to walk out). Second, there were a couple of times where I felt nickel and dimed – like paying for water at dinner (tap water isn't potable), or being charged a service fee buying postcards in addition to the VAT tax. Little things like that add up.Dina from United Kingdom – 8 March 2025 (9/10)
This place is a must! 5* star rooms and service in the middle of a jungle!
The room looked amazing, you can sit on your terrace surrounded by forest!
Everyone was mostly helpful and friendly.
Food was good, the menu had both western and asian options, nice drinks in the bar as well.
Highly recommended.
What could be improved: I did not have time to go to their spa!Simon from Denmark – 8 March 2025 (9/10)
The staff was absolutely excellent!
Lauren from United Kingdom – 21 January 2025 (9/10)
All staff were fantastic- Sophie, Vu, Tuan, everyone we met. They even managed to find a new room for us in a quieter area
The rooms are great and the area is so clean and green
What could be improved: Unfortunately we received an email the evening before booking that government officials were visiting the park and that it would only reopen to tourists at 2pm so we missed the entire morning.
The spa was also closed on the saturday, though it was open the next day we didnt have time
The location was quiet but karaoke is allowed which disturbed the peace and quiet.Gail from United Kingdom – 20 January 2025 (9/10)
Beautiful retreat with wonderful staff who were all so hospitable and helpful. We had a fabulous room – so cosy and comfortable. A big thank you to the lovely Hong for her kind assistance.
What could be improved: Nothing to dislike!Fabio from Vietnam – 20 January 2025 (9/10)
The place is just great, nestled in the mountains of Ba Vi Park.
You forget about the noisy Hanoi just few Kms away.
The care of the staff and attention to details was outstanding.
What could be improved: I would improve the pizza, for such a high end hotel the pizza was embarassing.
I would increase the amount of toilets around the park.
I would have larger seats at the restaurants.
