The rooms are compact (well, it’s Vietnam, everything’s compact) but cleverly laid out, and honestly, the air conditioning works better than places I’ve stayed that cost twice as much. What really sold me was how quiet it gets at night. Tu Mo area isn’t exactly the Old Quarter with its constant honking and street food vendors calling out until 2 AM, but even so, being tucked back in that alley means you actually sleep through the night.

The staff here gets it – they understand that foreign visitors need help navigating the neighborhood, but they’re not hovering over you constantly. When I asked about getting to Lotte Tower (which is maybe a 10-minute motorbike ride), the guy at reception didn’t just point vaguely toward the main road. He walked me outside and showed me exactly which turn to take, then mentioned this little coffee shop on Pham Hung street where I could grab proper Vietnamese coffee on the way back. That kind of local insight is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to feel less like a tourist stumbling around. The 8.7 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve been there a few days – it’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but everything just works the way it should. The wifi doesn’t cut out during video calls, the hot water is actually hot, and checkout doesn’t turn into some complicated negotiation. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need, especially if you’re using Hanoi as a base to explore northern Vietnam and you just want a reliable place to come back to.

  What could be improved: After a long trip,all I wanted was to have a hot shower, rest and heat up my leftover food.
  
  None of this was to be.
  
  Immediately after the host woman left…..construction noise loudly through the wall. Drilling and hammering for 3.5 hours.
  I asked if this will continue tomorrow, and the reply was an unconvincing “they are preparing for Tet holiday”, despite there being work tools in their own entrance, they blamed it on magical “neighbours”
  Impossible for me to rest after my long travel.
  Worse still!
  From 8am, it all started again. What a horrible way to wake!
  I begged the host to allow me 1 more hour of sleep, and he made lame excuses, and the noise continued.
  
  They advertise a fully equipped kitchen.
  Lies. Utter lies.
  There is nothing here, not a pot or pan nor cutlery….just a couple tea cups and saucers, and a filthy kettle…. The kitchen had CLEARLY not been cleaned.
  
  No hot water to shower, and when I complained they said “you have to put the card in the slot” as if it was my fault….it hadn't moved since they put it in at check-in.
  I switched everything off and on again, and waited. And waited. And it did finally heat up after an hour…and lasted about 15 seconds before becoming cold again, and I had to wash soap off me in cold water.
  I left the hot water on all night, hoping for at least a hot shower in the morning.
  Nope. Again, 15 seconds of hot water, then below body temp cold water.
  
  Also no hair dryer until I asked, and I had to wait for 30 mins and ask again before I finally got it and could go out for food.
  
  The room is cold in winter, and ofcourse the heater does not work.
  
  Neither does the washing machine. It actually made my clothes worse! I had to wash them 3 times before they smelled ok again.
  
  It looks nice at face value, but nothing is really clean, the sheets are old and stained, and the towel is an uncomfortable thing…two towels sewed together.
  
  I was hoping to find a place to stay for a week.
  I left after one night.
