Hàng Than connects you to the main drag within a two-minute walk, so you can hit up the weekend night market or grab phở at those tiny corner spots, then retreat back to relative quiet. I actually appreciated being able to open the windows at night without the constant honking – well, there’s still some honking because this is Hanoi, but it’s manageable. The Ba Dinh area gives you easy access to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature if you’re doing the tourist thing, but you’re also close enough to the lake for morning walks when the city’s just waking up and the tai chi groups are out in full force. Check-in was smooth – the host actually met me there and showed me how everything worked, including the slightly tricky shower controls and the best way to work the air conditioning (pro tip: it’s powerful, so you won’t be sweating through the humid months). The building itself is typical Old Quarter – a bit worn around the edges but structurally solid, and you’ll definitely get your steps in with those stairs.
