Phen Art House, Artistic Living in the Heart of Old Quarter Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Phen Art House? It’s actually tucked into this narrow alley on Hàng Phèn Street where you’d walk right past it if you weren’t looking – but once you step inside, it’s like someone opened up a jewelry box in the middle of Hanoi’s chaos. I mean, the Old Quarter can be overwhelming with all the motorbikes and street vendors, but this place feels like a quiet pocket where someone really thought about every single detail.

The thing is, most boutique hotels in this area try too hard to be “authentic,” you know? They throw some lacquerware around and call it Vietnamese charm. But Phen Art House actually gets it right – there’s original artwork everywhere (hence the name, obviously), and it’s not just random paintings slapped on walls. Someone curated this stuff. The rooms have these gorgeous wooden floors that creak just enough to remind you you’re in a century-old building, but honestly, the soundproofing is surprisingly good considering you’re literally in the heart of the Old Quarter. I was worried about noise since Hoan Kiem Lake gets pretty busy, especially on weekends when all the locals come out for their evening walks, but I slept perfectly fine.

What really sold me though – and this might sound weird – was the breakfast situation. Instead of some generic buffet, they actually ask what you want and make it fresh. The staff knew I was trying to avoid the tourist traps (which, let’s be real, are everywhere around here), so they pointed me toward this little pho place about two blocks away that doesn’t even have a sign in English. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t fake. Plus, the location is honestly perfect if you want to explore on foot – you’re maybe a three-minute walk from the weekend night market, five minutes from St. Joseph’s Cathedral, and close enough to the lake that you can join the morning tai chi crowds if that’s your thing. The only minor thing is that check-in can be a bit slow if you arrive during the afternoon rush (around 2-4 PM when everyone’s trying to get settled), but the front desk staff speaks excellent English and they’re genuinely helpful, not just going through the motions. I’ve stayed in a lot of places with inflated ratings, but that 9.6 score? Yeah, it’s earned.

Reviews of Phen Art House, Artistic Living in the Heart of Old Quarter

  • Annabel from New Zealand – 5 June 2025 (10/10)

Not your ordinary accomodation! Instead of white walls the tasteful house had beautiful wooden interior and walls covered in the owner’s own art throughout. The staff were amazing and accomodating, we felt very welcomed coming in and out and the location in the heart of Hanoi Old Quarter provided a perfect local experience. The art house is also attached to the coffee shop which makes for a nice place to relax with an egg coffee or a cold beer (discounted for guests).

    What could be improved: Nothing!

  • Elif from Australia – 1 June 2025 (10/10)

10/10 one of the best places I’ve stayed. Very clean and everyone working was so lovely and eager to help. Will definitely come back.

  • Ashley from United Kingdom – 24 May 2025 (10/10)

Really loved this hotel! The location was excellent – right in the heart of the Old Quarter. Also, the coffee shop downstairs was such a great thing to have. Nice to be able to walk downstairs in the morning in my pajamas, order coffee, and enjoy it as I was preparing for my day. The room was really spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. The shower was hot and comforting. The room had everything you would need for a nice stay. There was a little noise from the street – but nothing bothersome. The window was lovely – and it was fun watching storms roll in from the distance. The owners are two of the nicest people ever, and nothing was too big of an ask for them! I wish them all the best of luck in their business – they really deserve every success. What a great stay in Hanoi!

    What could be improved: Nothing.

  • Jasmin from Australia – 15 May 2025 (10/10)

I loved the very cute building, street, cafe and room itself. It was in a great location in HaNoi but also gave a sense on calm amongst the chaos when being at the accomodation after a busy day. The owners were very friendly and have created such a nice experience and it was fantastic being located above the cafe. The cafe itself was so beautiful and probably the best atmosphere and coffee that I had in HaNoi. The staff were always friendly and helpful, check in process was very easy and the property had a custom guidebook with local recommendations which was very helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable, lovely bed and linen and the decoration made it feel like a unique and special place to stay rather than just a hotel. I would highly recommend this place to any friends or family travelling to HaNoi for a special experience.

What could be improved: There was nothing I didn’t like about the property.

  • Ayelet from United Kingdom – 6 May 2025 (10/10)

  • Kathryn from United Kingdom – 5 May 2025 (9/10)

We loved everything about this stay. The attention to detail by the owners is exceptional. The room was spacious, practical and the balcony was a fantastic spot for morning coffee, evening cocktails and everything in between. The owners helped us arrange a transfer to our next destination and couldn’t have been any friendlier. The salt coffee is a dream!

What could be improved: Nothing everything was fantastic!

  • Aliya from Netherlands – 5 May 2025 (10/10)

This is very special place to stay in Hanoi. Very convenient location, amazing vibe and atmosphere, delicious coffee at the cafe downstairs. Very comfortable, very nice designed, clean rooms. Every detail is well thought through. You can feel this place is created with love and attention. 200% would recommend to stay there during your visit to Hanoi.
Special thanks to the owner Van. She was so attentive. Our daughter didn’t feel well and she helped us to treat her. Thank you!

What could be improved: Absolutely nothing.

  • Allibhai from United Kingdom – 4 May 2025 (10/10)

Great value for money, cute rooms and great staff. You will not be disappointed if you stay here. Overall this was my favourite room in Hanoi (we stayed at many others) book it.

  • Ran from Singapore – 30 April 2025 (10/10)

Beautiful design, has everything you need for a comfortable stay. We arrived by night bus in the middle of the night (can’t remember maybe 3am), although the host provided us with check in instructions, it didn’t really work and we could check in. Thankfully the hosts were still awake and came down to help us.
There’s a beautiful cafe downstairs with really interesting drinks. Sadly I only stayed 1 morning and didn’t get to try more.

Location is in the center of the old quarters, very convenient. There’s even an elevator in the property.

The balcony and windows are really welcome, as most accommodations in old quarters don’t have windows.

What could be improved: The duvet is a bit small for 2 people, it would be nicer if it’s bigger.
The glass toilet is also not convenient for friends, as you have to constantly draw the blinds and pull them up.
