I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Skylark Boutique Hotel on Phan Dinh Phung, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The entrance is tucked between a couple of local shops (there’s actually a pretty decent pho place two doors down), and from the street it looks smaller than it actually is. But once you step inside, the whole vibe shifts. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feeling that a lot of boutique places try for but don’t quite nail – think dark wood accents and local artwork that doesn’t feel like it was bought in bulk.

What really sold me on this place is the location, honestly. You’re right in Ba Dinh, which means you can walk to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in about ten minutes if you’re into that sort of thing, but more importantly, you’re on one of those tree-lined streets that feels authentically Hanoi without being touristy. I mean, you’ll hear the occasional motorbike convoy – it’s Vietnam, after all – but Phan Dinh Phung is quieter than the Old Quarter madness. The staff actually knows the neighborhood too, which is rarer than you’d think. They pointed me toward this little coffee shop around the corner that I never would have found otherwise, and the barista there makes a mean ca phe sua da.

The rooms themselves are… well, they’re solid. Not Instagram-perfect, but comfortable in a way that matters after a long day of wandering around temples and markets. The AC works (crucial during summer months), the wifi is reliable enough for video calls, and the beds are firmer than what you’d find at most Western chains – which I actually prefer. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, though the shower pressure could be better. What I really appreciated were the little touches: decent hangers in the closet, a small desk that’s actually usable, and blackout curtains that do their job. The 7.5 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to be something it’s not. If you’re looking for a place that feels like Hanoi rather than like it could be anywhere in the world, and you don’t need a rooftop infinity pool or a spa, the Skylark delivers on what actually matters.

  As we were first time travellers to Vietnam Hanoi can be a bit daunting lol but our stay at skylark made it so easy,the location was amazing ,and the staff could not have been more helpful ,organised our tours ,and made sure we always heading in the right direction when we left hotel ,showed us how to cross the road ,the breakfast was great

  it's a good value and the staff were helpful and attentive to my requests. the AC was great and beds comfortable but it's a bit dated and had small flaws like a broken light switch . but still good for the prices and locatis convenient to go everywhere I wanted surrounded by good food and coffee shops
