Something Overview

You know what struck me first about this place? The lobby actually feels like Vietnam – not some sanitized international hotel version of it. Something sits right in the heart of Hàng Cót street, and I mean right in it. You step out the front door and you’re immediately in that beautiful chaos of Old Quarter life, with motorbikes weaving past and the smell of phở floating from the corner spot that locals queue up at every morning.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re really in Hanoi. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake – and I don’t mean tourist-brochure three minutes, I mean actual walking time even when you’re dodging street vendors and stopping to look at things. The weekend night market is practically on your doorstep, and there’s this little bia hoi place about fifty meters down the street where I ended up most evenings, just watching the neighborhood wind down. The rooms are… well, they’re what you’d expect from a solid four-star in the Old Quarter. Not huge – this is a historic area, so everything’s built narrow and tall – but they’ve done a good job with the space. The air conditioning actually works (trust me, this matters in Hanoi summers), and somehow they’ve managed to keep most of the street noise out, which is pretty impressive considering you’re literally surrounded by the organized chaos of Vietnamese street life.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to get that balance between being helpful and not hovering. They know the area inside and out – like, when I asked about getting to the Temple of Literature, instead of just giving me directions, they told me which entrance to use and what time to go to avoid the tour groups. The breakfast setup is decent, though honestly, you’re going to want to eat at least half your meals at the street stalls and local spots around you anyway. I mean, why wouldn’t you when you’ve got some of the best street food in Southeast Asia right outside your door? The 8.3 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury, but it gets the important stuff right and puts you exactly where you want to be. If you’re the type who wants to experience Hanoi rather than just visit it, this works really well. Just don’t expect a pool or a gym – you’re in a centuries-old neighborhood where the buildings are packed together like puzzle pieces. But honestly, that’s exactly the point.

Reviews of Something

  • Vikram from Australia – 26 April 2025 (4/10)

The location is excellent—right in the Old Quarter and walkable to all major attractions. The beds were neat.

What could be improved: The washrooms are extremely tiny, and both my friend and I got hurt bumping our heads. The narrow staircase was also not clearly mentioned in the listing. When we raised these issues, the host apologized but refused to allow a cancellation. Also, they were extremely strict about noise, even when we were just parking our bikes late at night without talking. Tourist places are naturally active at night, and this property is not suitable for travelers who might arrive late.

  • Sonnika from United Kingdom – 22 April 2025 (7/10)

Great location, right in the old quarter but still tucked into a small alley. Accommodation in the old quarter is small but this had more space.

What could be improved: Bathroom on the ground floor was unusable for our preference due to the abundance of flies – this may be something beyond their control, I did not mention it as there was two of us on a short stay so we just used the top bathroom. Also, as it was something that was obvious from the moment we checked in I believed they must be aware of the issue.

  • Phu from Australia – 22 April 2025 (9/10)

An unforgettable and budget-friendly stay in Vietnam—grateful to have met the wonderful owners. Definitely recommend!

  • Nga from Canada – 17 April 2025 (9/10)

    Very spacious, clean and cozy!

What could be improved: I did not dislike anything about this property

  • Aaron from Germany – 7 April 2025 (9/10)

Quiet and big place with the coziest Beds you will find all over Vietnam. Easy self checkin and we could leave our luggage to pick it up later. Would definitely recommend!

  • Mary from India – 29 March 2025 (6/10)

    The location was great.

What could be improved: The bathrooms were a bit cramped/tiny.

  • Kevin from France – 11 March 2025 (9/10)

Amazing place, super kind and helpful owner, would love to stay again

What could be improved: We missed some cooking equipment but all we had to do was ask and we got everything we needed.
A coat hanger would be a nice addition as well as some cleaning equipment.

  • Dariusz from United Kingdom – 21 February 2025 (5/10)

Location was excellent, very central but just away from the noise.
    Great design (but with reservations!)

What could be improved: Asked a higher amount to pay once at location from what it was when booked.
Incredible drain stench in the bathroom downstairs making it near unusable.
No sound insulation between rooms / floors and getting separate rooms as one of us was coughing was key to a decent nights sleep.

  • Sagar from India – 17 January 2025 (9/10)

Cozy, nice place for a group, has two bedrooms with one attached bathroom and a common bathroom. Liked the vibe of the place, the hosts were very warm and welcoming and accommodative to our requirements.

What could be improved: It can be a little congested if you are overpackers and tend to make a mess while unpacking. Also the location may be a bit confusing to find at first, but just ask a few friendly neighbors and they'll guide you very well!

  • Maymona from Philippines – 19 December 2024 (9/10)

It is located at center of Hanoi. There were alot of souvenir shops & restaurants nearby. The house was beautiful & comfy.
