Look, I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, and honestly? Most of them are either cramped tourist traps or sterile business hotels that miss the point entirely. Splendid Secret Hotel is… well, it’s actually kind of perfectly named because you’d walk right past it on Lò Sũ Street if you weren’t looking. The entrance is tucked between a bánh mì stall and one of those narrow shophouses selling lacquerware, which I mean, is exactly what you want in this neighborhood. The moment you step inside though – and this sounds dramatic but bear with me – it’s like someone hit the quiet button on the chaos outside. The lobby has this warm wood thing going on, not the fake colonial stuff you see everywhere, but something that feels intentional and calm.

What really got me was how the staff actually knows the neighborhood. I’m talking about the kind of local intel you can’t Google – like which entrance to use for Ngoc Son Temple when it’s crowded (there’s a side gate most tourists miss), or that the best phở place is three alleys over, not the one all the guidebooks mention. The rooms themselves are honestly better than they have any right to be at this location. I had one facing the courtyard, which meant I could sleep without earplugs – no small feat when you’re basically in the heart of everything. The bathroom was one of those rainfall shower situations that actually worked properly, and you know what? The water pressure was fantastic, which… if you’ve been traveling around Southeast Asia, you’ll appreciate that detail. There’s this little coffee setup in each room too, but it’s Vietnamese coffee, not some generic international brand, and they leave you proper condensed milk.

The thing about staying here is you’re literally a two-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, but you’re on one of the quieter streets so you’re not dealing with the weekend crowds until you want to. I could grab coffee at one of the corner cafés in the morning – there’s this place where locals sit on tiny plastic stools that serves cà phê sữa đá that’ll wake you right up – then wander over to the lake when I felt like people-watching. Evenings, I’d come back through the night market chaos on Hang Ma Street, but then slip into this peaceful little bubble. The rooftop area (they don’t make a huge deal about it, but ask) has decent views over the tiled roofs, and it’s where I ended up most evenings with a beer, just watching the motorbike ballet happening in the streets below. I mean, a 9.9 rating sounds almost too good to be true, but after staying there, I get it. It’s not trying to be flashy or Instagram-perfect – it’s just really, really good at being exactly what you need when you want to actually experience Hanoi instead of just passing through it.

  We had 5 night stay at Splendid Premium Hotel – clean rooms, perfect location for exploring downtown and exceptional service! Mrs. Kate, Mrs. Rachel and Mr. Jacky made our stay memorable!

  We had to leave our Airbnb because it was dirty and therefore chose this hotel last minute. We booked a suite with private balcony. The staff greeted us right away and everyone was so nice and funny. We really felt welcome. They gave us a bottle of wine for free. The room was spacious and clean. Laundry was 60.000 Dong per Kilo but they gave it to us for free and also a little gift of vietnamese coffee when we checked out. The breakfast was delicious and had different options every day, also an egg station. Therr is also a very nice skybar on the 12th floor. This is in walking distance to Hoan Kiem lake and lots of shops. We want to thank the staff for always making us feel welcome and like the most important guests.
  
  What could be improved: The picture of the pool on the roof is not correct. There is a pool, but on the second to last floor with windows, so rather indoor pool. Also the room descriptions should be reviewed, because ours said it had a washing machine and 10 beds.
