Sushi House Homestay Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Sushi House Homestay? The name completely throws you off – I was expecting some cramped apartment above a sushi restaurant, but this place in Quốc Oai is actually a proper homestay that feels more like staying with a really organized Vietnamese family who happens to have incredible taste in interior design. The 9.3 rating makes total sense once you’re there, honestly.
I mean, Quốc Oai isn’t exactly central Hanoi – you’re about 30 minutes west of the Old Quarter, which some people might see as a downside, but hear me out. This area is where locals actually live, and the homestay sits in this quiet residential pocket where you’ll wake up to the sound of motorbikes puttering by (not the aggressive honking you get downtown) and neighbors chatting over morning pho from the street vendor who sets up right at the corner every day around 6 AM. The hosts – and they really do treat this like hosting, not just running a business – will actually walk you down there the first morning and help you order if your Vietnamese is nonexistent like mine was. There’s something really genuine about staying here that you just don’t get at those glossy hotels near Hoan Kiem Lake.
The room itself surprised me too – everything’s clean in that obsessively Vietnamese way, with wooden floors that someone clearly spends time maintaining and these traditional touches (lacquered furniture, silk wall hangings) mixed with modern stuff like really good wifi and air conditioning that actually works. I stayed in the upstairs room facing the small garden, and honestly, sitting on that little balcony with Vietnamese coffee in the late afternoon became my favorite part of each day. The family keeps the common areas spotless, there’s always fresh fruit available, and the bathroom has one of those rain showers that makes you want to stay in there forever – though the hot water takes a minute to kick in, just so you know. What really sealed it for me was how the hosts handle the small stuff: they’ll call you a Grab bike to get into the city (way cheaper than a taxi), they know which local restaurants are worth walking to for dinner, and when I mentioned wanting to see more of rural Vietnam, they connected me with their cousin who does motorcycle tours of the countryside. It’s that kind of place where the 4-star rating feels almost beside the point – you’re staying somewhere that gives you an actual window into how people live here, while still being comfortable enough that you’re not roughing it.
