The Pu House Homestay Overview
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, but The Pu House Homestay honestly caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. You know that street right by St. Joseph’s Cathedral? Phố Nhà Thờ gets absolutely packed during the day with tourists snapping photos, but here’s the thing most people don’t realize: once evening hits and the cathedral lights up, it becomes this incredibly peaceful pocket in the middle of all the Old Quarter chaos. The Pu House sits right there at number 2, and I actually walked past it twice before spotting the entrance because it blends so naturally into the historic streetscape.
What really gets me about this place is how the owners – and I’m pretty sure they’re the ones checking you in, not some random staff – have managed to create something that feels authentically Vietnamese without trying too hard. The rooms have this perfect balance of traditional touches and modern comfort that most homestays completely botch. I mean, you’ll find beautiful wooden furniture and local textiles, but the air conditioning actually works (trust me, this matters in Hanoi summers), and the WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes like so many places in the quarter. The morning light filtering through the windows is honestly gorgeous, especially if you get one of the upper floor rooms facing the cathedral – though fair warning, you’ll hear the bells if you’re a light sleeper. Personally, I found it charming, but my travel buddy needed earplugs.
Here’s what really sold me though: the location is ridiculously perfect for exploring, but not in that generic “walking distance to everything” way that every hotel claims. You’re literally a two-minute stroll from Hoan Kiem Lake for morning coffee watching, three minutes from the weekend night market on Hang Dao (which gets absolutely wild on Saturday evenings), and – this is key – you’re close enough to duck back for an afternoon nap when the heat gets brutal. The family running the place knows their stuff too; they’ll point you toward the good pho spot around the corner that doesn’t have any English signs, and they actually remember your name after day one. It’s that kind of personal attention that makes a 4-star rating feel more valuable than some sterile 5-star chains I’ve experienced. The whole experience just feels… right, you know? Like you’re staying with people who genuinely care about showing you their city properly.

I loved this place! It’s right in the middle of the Old Quarter. It’s super accessible and despite being next to the cathedral, it was very quiet and peaceful inside.
The place is very spacious and every room was definitely comfortable.
The hosts were very accommodating and are excellent communicators as well. Checking in was a breeze despite us arriving so late. They’re super nice!
