Alley Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Alley? The name made me expect some cramped side-street situation, but this place actually sits pretty nicely on Tôn Thất Thiệp – which, if you’re not familiar with Hanoi, is one of those tree-lined streets in Ba Dinh that feels refreshingly calm compared to the chaos of the Old Quarter. I mean, you’re still in the heart of things, but you can actually have a conversation on the sidewalk without shouting over motorbike horns.
The hotel itself has this understated thing going on that I really appreciated. It’s not trying to be flashy or over-the-top Vietnamese themed (you know how some places go overboard with the lacquered wood and dragon motifs). Instead, it feels modern but warm – sort of like staying at a well-designed friend’s place if your friend happened to have excellent taste and a proper coffee setup. The lobby smells faintly of jasmine, which sounds cheesy when I write it out, but honestly works. What really sold me was the staff – they actually knew the neighborhood. When I asked about good pho that wasn’t touristy, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic list. He walked me to the street corner and pointed toward this tiny place on Điện Biên Phủ where locals actually eat breakfast.
The rooms are solid – clean lines, comfortable beds, and those little touches that show someone was paying attention. The shower pressure is excellent (crucial after walking around Hanoi all day), and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine, which you’d be surprised how rare that is. I was worried about street noise since Vietnamese cities never really sleep, but the windows do their job well. You’ll hear the occasional motorbike at night, but it’s more like a gentle hum than the full symphony you get closer to Hoan Kiem Lake. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building – I could video call from the hallway if I wanted to, though I’m not sure why I’d want to. Location-wise, you’re about a fifteen-minute walk to the Temple of Literature, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is practically around the corner if that’s your thing. But honestly, what I loved most was being able to wander the quieter streets around Ba Dinh in the early morning before the city fully wakes up – there’s something special about Hanoi at 6 AM when the street vendors are just setting up and the light is still soft.

Great Stay! Everything was perfect
Greg from Vietnam – 6 March 2025 (4/10)
Large clean self contained room with comfy bed.
What could be improved: Access is by code through a pet grooming shop which requires 2 sets of coded entry after hours. No reception or staff on site & all communications are done via WhatsApp.
Noise-being located right next to train street, a major busy insection & a karaoke bar makes for a good night's sleep impossible.Marc from Belgium – 3 March 2025 (10/10)
Very quiet, spacious room, excellent bed and bed linen, all new. Super bathroom. Very close to the old quarter and the old train station. Elevator at all levels, very safe

We stayed here with our two young children. We are so so glad we chose here to stay, amazing space to have whilst exploring Hanoi. It's located right next to "Hanoi train street" so you can hear the trains passing by and hooting but we absolutely loved hearing it and didn't keep us awake at night. Close to all amenities and there's a fabulous bao bun stall on the next street for just 8k a bun and also nice coffee shops. The studio is immaculate, everything you need. Washing machine was a plus. Shower great. Bed was huge, firm but comfortable and the bedding was lovely (like those nice hotel sheets!) The appliances were brand new and food brands so all worked very well. Easy to get in and out, during unsocial hours there's a locked gate and a pin which was easy to use. We loved it here and absolutely would return.

Everything in the photos match up.
Single handedly the best studio my girlfriend and I have stumbled across in 4 months of Vietnam traveling.
Clean, great location, great lighting with lamps and natural light, a spacious room with a small balcony overlooking a part of train street and the city, a smart TV with Netflix, clothes washer and dryer and all the soaps, a spacious bathroom, it has everything you’ll need. The very responsive host can help you with anything else.
The location was a little bizarre as you have to walk through a small shop to the elevator but honestly it’s not even an issue. They even watched our packs for us while we went out.
What could be improved: The trains can be a little loud, but only last for a few moments. Last train is around 11pm some days if you’re an early sleeper.Zbigniew from Poland – 8 February 2025 (10/10)
Apartament idealny. Wszystko sprawne i nowe: meble, sprzęty, śnieżnobiała pościel i ręczniki, mała lodówka, pralka, mikrofalówka, sejf w szafie, gorąca woda, kosmetyki i detergenty, butelkowana woda, kawa, herbata, wszystko nowe, lepiej niż w pięciogwiazdkowym hotelu. A do tego lokalizacja zaraz przy "street train". Jestem przeszczęśliwy. Dziękuję
