Amara Hanoi Hotel and Spa Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Amara Hanoi Hotel and Spa on Hàng Quạt Street, I wasn’t expecting much from the narrow Old Quarter entrance. You know how it is with these heritage buildings tucked between the tube houses. But stepping inside was like discovering a secret – suddenly there’s this gorgeous courtyard and you realize the place actually stretches way back from the street.

The location is what really got me though. I mean, you’re literally in the heart of the Old Quarter, maybe a three-minute walk to Hoan Kiem Lake where all the early morning tai chi happens. What I love is that Hàng Quạt isn’t one of those crazy tourist streets like Ta Hien where you can’t sleep because of the bia hoi crowds – it’s got that perfect balance where you feel authentically Hanoi but can actually get some rest. The weekend night market on Friday and Saturday gets a bit lively, but honestly, that’s part of the charm. You can step out your front door and grab amazing bun cha or pho from places that have been there for decades.

What surprised me most was how they’ve managed to blend the colonial architecture with modern comfort without making it feel fake or Disney-fied. The rooms have these beautiful French windows that actually open (thank god, because sometimes you need real air circulation in Hanoi’s humidity), and the bathrooms are genuinely spacious – which anyone who’s stayed in Old Quarter hotels knows is basically a miracle. The spa downstairs is where I ended up spending way too much time, especially after long days walking around the city. There’s something about getting a massage after navigating Hanoi traffic that just hits different.

I’ve got to mention the staff because they actually seem to know the neighborhood – not just the tourist spots everyone recommends. The front desk guy told me about this incredible cao lau place down a random alley that I never would’ve found otherwise, and the concierge helped me figure out the best times to visit the Temple of Literature to avoid the school groups. Small things, but you know what I mean – it’s the difference between feeling like a guest versus feeling like you’re just passing through.

The 9.4 rating honestly makes sense once you’re there. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Hanoi – there are definitely more luxurious options if that’s what you’re after. But for someone who wants to actually experience the city rather than just stay somewhere nice, this place gets it right. You’re close enough to walk everywhere that matters, the building has character without being falling apart, and you’ve got that spa to retreat to when the sensory overload of Old Quarter gets to be too much. Plus, check-in was smooth even when I showed up early after a red-eye flight, which honestly saved my entire first day in the city.

Mr MAX (the Customer Care Manager) was excellent at helping me make the most of my limited time in Hanoi, by recommending places to visit/potential trips.

  • Eliza from Australia – 6 June 2025 (10/10)

Amazing location in the center of old quarter (yet still quiet), staff was very attentive, good accommodations. Pete was on top of everything from the second we booked and helped us plan a trip to ha long bay as well, which was a perfect overnight cruise.

This is a lovely hotel in a great location and right near shops, food and attractions such as beer street, the temple on the lake and the famous Note Coffee cafe. The hotel was clean and provided fresh towels and laundry service. The staff were always super helpful and friendly when we needed anything and really friendly when passing through the lobby. It’s really easy to get taxi’s to further out locations so this is a great central location.

Very warm welcome from the hotel!

  • Henry from United States – 5 June 2025 (10/10)

Very comfortable and clean room, well equipped to European standards. Very quiet (we slept very well), despite being very central and close to everything (restaurants, bars, shops). Note: the family room with two beds has no exterior window, but it does have an interior window (with a beautiful photo of Ha Long Bay – it still felt nice).
